Rollin'

I can't deny all of my fabulous blog readers the pleasure of knowing what awesome event we have going on in Lincoln right now. It's the NATIONAL FIGURE ROLLER SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS! I know, I know. If you were me, you'd be there EVERY DAY! But, alas, I could only afford one day. Unfortunately, I didn't take too many pictures of the skating. I had one or more kids on my lap for the majority of the time. Here are the pictures I did take. Caleb did eventually take his hands off his ears. It was a good thing, too. Otherwise he would have missed the Pirates of the Caribbean music that every other skater decided to choose for her routine. I was pretty good at guessing the music based on the costumes. Red and black? Why, it's a Paso Doble! Neon w/ a flower in the hair? That's gotta be a merengue beat. There was one girl that had on an interesting outfit. Based on that, I thought her number was going to be Gladiator Disco. I was so close! It was Egyptian Disco.

Tiffany's son N was clearly amazed at the artistry.
The actual skating wasn't that impressive. Okay, I couldn't do those things. But the "best" part of it was when they would fall and Caleb would say, "Are you okay?" or "Oops!". There was a lot of falling.

Eva just wanted to walk up and down the aisles. We ended up "driving" on some of the arcade games. That was fun.
I think we were the only ones in the arena that weren't competitors or families of the competitors. I don't know why. It was totally sweet and I can't wait until the next one! If you live in this area, don't despair! You can still see them. It's $8 at the Pershing Center for just a few more days.

I'm a Winner!

I entered six items in the Lancaster County Fair. Three are knitted and three are crocheted. First, the knitting.

The sweater was made with my Jo Sharp super clearance yarn. I entered it at the last minute. It's not my best work but it won 2nd prize and $3 (with this--I break even for my entry fee).

I made the Airy Scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. I made one of these when I first got the book and donated it to a service auction at our church. I decided to make another one to bust that yarn from my stash and have something else to enter in the fair. It also won 2nd prize and $3. You can kind of see an ivory cabled sweater off to the right. It won best in lot for knitting. I think Snowdrop could have given it a run for its money, but that's okay.

These socks should look familiar! I just finished them on Monday. They are for my uncle for Christmas. Now, he will own BLUE RIBBON winning socks! First place= $4.

Now, the crocheted items. I made a doily just to use up some of my thread and pad my entries. This one is called Penny Lane and it won 2nd place (another $3).

This doily was made for my grandma for Christmas. She was pleased to hear it won a BLUE RIBBON! First place= $4.

This dress is really beautiful in real life. It is a christening gown. I put it on Eva for her to wear it to the temple to be sealed to us but it was way too big so she didn't wear it. That's okay. I'm keeping this dress forever. Not only is it lovely, it won me first prize ($4!) and BEST IN LOT! That means (according to the judges) it was the best dang crocheted item in the whole fair.
Best in lot winners get an extra $3. Not too bad for a $3 investment. This is really motivating me to get my act together for the state fair. They don't have as many monetary prizes but it is free to enter and best in lot winners get gift certificates to yarn stores ($25). Plus, it's not really about the money. It's about being a winner. And, gosh darn it...I am one!

Flip Flop Swap

I participated in a really neat swap this last month. We were supposed to swap flip flops and other summer related goodies. My swap mate was the actual organizer of this event, Karen. We filled out a questionnaire on what types of things we liked/wanted. Karen did not disappoint! I said it would be cool to get some red flip flops. What do you think? They go great with my newest pedicure and my red bell peppers!

I got not only one, but TWO pair! The one has a really cool plaid pattern. Groovy.

I didn't have any good summer beach reads but I thought maybe a book of sudoku would be nice. What's this? Even better! Electronic sudoku. One more thing to get totally addicted to! Carl is going to be so happy! ;)

Thanks, Karen!

Doh!

I took my items to be entered into the county fair yesterday. I was just about to fall asleep and I remembered something. I forgot to take my SNOWDROP SHAWL! That was the whole reason I was entering the dang fair anyway. Oh well. I'll try and get it into the state fair. Judging starts today at the county fair and I'll know tomorrow if I won any ribbons.

Socks

Here is a quickie post to prove that I finished my July socks in time. Woohoo! I finished them this morning.

Specs: Based on the Gentlemen's Plain Winter Socks in Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush. I didn't use the same heel but the concept was from that sock.
100% Shetland Wool in Charcoal.
I love how they turned out. They are for my uncle for Christmas and I just dropped them off at the county fair. Let's hope that he gets AWARD WINNING socks for Christmas!

Oh, Pioneers!

This funny story has nothing to do with the kids. I went with my friends and two of their kids to the Winter Quarters Visitor Center in Omaha. Our younger kids stayed home with Carl.

We watched a short video and then a sister missionary (Sister D--one that was just transferred from our ward) started to give us a tour. She was telling the kids (ages 10 and 6) that this was a really fun tour because you get to pack a wagon and pull a handcart. I was lagging behind a bit with John (Tiffany's husband) and I said, "That doesn't sound like fun at all". John didn't waste a moment and said, "Do we get to get scurvy, too?".

I think we were the only ones that heard ourselves say that but it was too funny not to share.

T is for...

T is for TIME--the longest time I've ever had a best friend (since 1989).
I is for INTELLIGENT--this girl is as smart as they come!
F is for FUNNY--this is a requirement for all of my friends
F is for FRIDAY--King Friday Wo lives on and on
A is for AMBITIOUS--she's a librarian and a super mom that I really look up to a lot
N is for NIFTY--nobody can whip up a piñata like her!
Y is for YOUTHFUL--we can still giggle like teenagers talking about our silly antics

Tiffany is my friend and has been visiting here with her family since Wednesday. We are having such a good time--I can't even tell you. It's been a blast. We remember the funniest things and it has been fun reminding ourselves of the stupid things we have said and done. I'll be back blogging in full force next week once things calm down around here.

Lisa--do you remember doing the Humpty Dance song at girl's camp with Julie?

New Baby

No, not a new baby for us. I've got my hands FULL for now. But, a blog friend of mine just got a new daughter and I must admit, she's as cute as mine! Go wish them well here.

Smells Like Teen Spirit

From the blog that brought you a report on aromatherapy chapstick and the benefits of those crazy flavored water packets, I bring you Optimism. I like starting my day off by smelling something appealing. This usually involves some kind of shampoo and deodorant. I like them to smell nice. Imagine my surprise when I was shopping and found the Secret deodorant (my brand of choice) that not only smells nice but promises optimism! They also have ambition smelling deodorant but I figured that I could be ambitious but if I'm not optimistic about it, it's kind of useless.

Optimism. Sniff. My glass is half full. Sniff. People like me. Sniff. It's going to be a great day!

American Inventor 2

I've come up with an excellent idea for American Inventor 2. Imagine this: church pews with seat belts. I think it's a winner.

Shiner

I feel like I've been a sub-par blogger this week. I really just haven't had much to say. This summer is just creeping along and we didn't really do much this week. We have a big day today because there is a pioneer celebration at the park. I'll blog about that next week, I suppose. I'm sure I'll be taking pictures. These are the only pictures we've taken this week.

I was making hamburgers and had on an apron. It was one I got from my Pampered Chef days (if you need any PC stuff, I've got a show that I'm closing tonight or Monday---how's that for a plug---a lady I know just started her business so I'm helping her out) and it has 3 stars on it. Caleb LOVES stars (any shapes, for that matter) and wanted to wear it. He wore that thing for two days. I think he'd still be wearing it if they hadn't ripped the ties out of it. The cutest part was seeing his little bum poke out the back. This picture does not do it justice, I'm afraid.
Eva's had a black eye all week. It happened last Saturday while I was at my knitting group. In Carl's defense, it probably would have happened if I was at home too but, still... Carl didn't see it happen. He said that Caleb probably pushed her into his toy piano and she got it right in the eye. Or, she just happened to fall on the piano. I'm more prone to believe that pushing was involved. But, it hasn't slowed her down any. This picture also does not do it justice.
In other news, the rate of escape out of this house was increasing dramatically this week. Caleb finally learned how to unlock the sliding glass door to the backyard. He would go out back, let Eva follow him and then run around to the front of the house and ring the doorbell before I could even know what was happening. I became afraid to go to the bathroom or even up to the fridge without taking the kids with me and having them in my sight at all times. I would try to tell Carl about this and how I need better locks on both of the doors (Caleb has been getting out of the front door--deadbolt and all--for weeks) but I don't think he realized how important this was until the other night. Carl was watching them and finally "got it" on how they can escape so quickly. That night he installed a chain for the front door (up high) and rigged up a wooden bar (also up high) for the sliding door. No escapes since then. Whew.

Knit This

Remember this knit? I think Carl has worn this ONCE since his interview process. I want my wool back! He's been hemming and hawing on whether or not I can rip this out. I got his permission this week. He told me what he liked and didn't like about it and we came up with a better plan. He wants a v-neck vest that isn't as "heavy". He wants argyle. I aim to please. Here is the pattern I'm going to use. We're going to use black, khaki, and either green or blue (I bought both--so we could decide what would look best). I'm getting yarn from knitpicks. I also ordered a size one circular (my set only goes down to a size two). I can't believe I'm going to knit this on size one and two needles. I told him that he might have it for the next school year (2007-2008). Although, I could get pretty motivated and whip it out in no time.

I have several WIPs (work in progress).

1. Gathering Intentions sweater. I'm working slowly but surely on the back. I only work on this in spurts and when the kids are sleeping.

2. Socks. I'm always going to have a pair of socks in the works. This latest pair is for a Christmas present.

3. Scarf. This is for another Christmas present. I love how it is turning out. But, you'll have to wait for pictures.

4. Teletubbie blanket. I'm trying to get rid of some of my stash and learn some new knitting techniques in the process. This blanket is using what is left from making the Teletubbie hats. I'm making wedges and each wedge is a different color. It's not pretty---but it's just for the kids to play with so I don't care too much. It is really "mindless" knitting and I could always use some of that.

5. Tank tops. I'm starting one for Mckenzie. And, I'll start on soon for Claire (what size, Deanna?). I've got to make Mckenzie's a top priority since they're moving to Virginia NEXT WEEK! I've got a lot of tv to catch up on to make room on our dvr so that will be good tv knitting for the next day or two. Plus, it's TOO DANG HOT to go outside anyway.

Want to know what I'm going to do about the signs? Me too. I still haven't decided but I'm leaning towards telling them to FORGET IT! I can make my own dang sign. But, I know I won't make my own dang sign unless I'm "forced" to by going to this dang sign party but I won't be able to make my own the way I want it anyway. AARGH. I should just forget about it and be done with it. But, it would look absolutely perfect in my dining room! Where's the Xanax?

My Way or the Highway

Most of you that know me won't be surprised at all by this blog post. I like getting my own way. Is it the oldest child in me or just a horrible character flaw? I don't know.

The other day I got an email that our local yarn store is going out of business. Well, not really. They are just closing one of their locations. I think I may have been a little out of my mind when I read that everything in the store was going to be 20% off until they close. I went the next day with a list of some of my bigger projects that I need yarn for. I bought 17 balls of Lily Chin's Chelsea (reg price $6/ball), a couple skeins of alpaca laceweight and a skein of sock yarn. I didn't notice until later that I didn't get my 20% off. I was mad enough to take it to the other location to speak with the owner. Oops. Did the email just say 20% off books and magazines? My bad. I'm going to have to return all this yarn because there is no way I'm paying full price right now when I don't really need it at the moment. The owner started freaking out and telling me that this is why she had to close the store in the first place, people finding better deals, etc... I told her that I'd support her store when the prices are the same or less but I'm not going to spend more at her store just because I'm nice like that (I said it in a more tactful way than that). She ended up giving me back 20% of the purchase price if I'd keep the yarn. Do I feel a little guilty? Some. But, she got a big purchase that she wouldn't have received had she not given me 20% off.

In other news, a group of gals from church are having a sign party. Have you heard of this before? You can find out what is being sold by going to this website. At the parties you get to choose from 26 pre-selected signs and you get a discount because you paint them yourselves. I chose a pre-selected sign but Carl doesn't like the font. He doesn't want me to get it unless I can get it in a different font. I emailed one of the ladies that runs the website and she basically told me that she can't do it because once she does it once it will set a precedent and they keep the prices low by offering a small amount for the parties. I can order the sign exactly how I want it but they will do it themselves and charge me about 50% more than if I did it myself (which I prefer). I was going to order at least 2 or 3 other signs from them as gifts (from the list) but now I don't know if I want to do that now because I'm mad they won't do what I want. I understand where they're coming from. Really, I do. But, I'm so stubborn. Should I just suck it up? I won't be able to get the sign I want because there is no way that Carl is going to be okay with paying the extra money. I would still be able to do the ones for gifts but if I'm not getting one myself--how much fun will that really be?

Apology

I feel the need to apologize to all of the people that were hoping to have a nice relaxing lunch at the Pizza Hut buffet on O street. I don't think they realized that I was coming with 2 friends and our 9 kids (ages 16 months-12 yrs). We had a blast. But, you guys? Probably not so much. You're probably not used to watching kids drink the peach juice off a plate with a straw or see a toddler only want to "eat" marinara sauce (mainly getting it all over her face). Not to mention having the adults try to have a conversation over 6 other conversations going on by LOUD children. I'm sorry if you aren't used to this sort of thing. But, a word of warning. We'll be back next week.

Lazy Days

Just enjoying some lazy summer days.

Eva is a little water baby. Caleb could care less. He got a little brave and tried to touch the water but he wouldn't run through it at all. I think he'll get used to it eventually and start to like it.

Enjoy the pics.
Have a great weekend!

Er

Have I told this story before? I can't remember and I didn't dig back into the archives far enough to tell.

It all started when I began telling Caleb, "You're such a good eater!". He's really good at sitting at the table and eating without making a mess. He LOVES praise (who doesn't?). His face lights up and then he would just repeat what I said over and over. Now he doesn't wait for me to say it--every time he sits down to eat he says, "Caleb, you're such a good eater!". He's also worked out the formula for the sentence in that brain of his and now he applies it to other things. Here's a sample of what I've heard so far.

Eva, you're such a good clapper!
Caleb, you're such a good dancer!
You're such a good shaper! (while he was playing with some of his shapes)
You're such a good water planter!
You're such a good pianoer!
Mommy, you're such a good mommyer!

Sequels

And now for the sequel to my previous post.

Saturday
Saturday morning, Carl had some meetings to go to so the kids and I took it easy at home. We cleaned up a little (again??? I know--crazy--but it was for the babysitter) and watered the plants (my bell peppers are looking sweet!). When Carl got home I went out shopping for the elusive kid sized table and chairs. I went to Bed Bath & Beyond and to Old Navy. Okay, I didn't really expect to find a kid size table and chairs at Old Navy but it was close. I scored a really cute skirt for $5 and they had a matching one for Eva. Hot. We're going to get mother/daughter pictures in those for sure. Still no table.

Then, it was time to pick up the babysitter. First, I had to stop at the movie theater to get the tickets. We saw Pirates of the Caribbean 2. Good thing I bought the tickets when I did because by the time I got the babysitter and dropped her off at our house and we got back to the theater, it was sold out. We had to sit in the 2nd row, but it was WORTH IT! When you're like us and you only get to see one or two movies a year, you gotta make sure you get your money's worth. Oooh baby. We did.

I took the babysitter home and came home to watch the World Cup third place game. I left before we were finished watching it because I went shopping some more. I tried my luck at Osco, Walgreens, Big Lots, and ShopKo. I didn't buy a table but I got a hairbrush (Eva put my previous one in the toilet and I was never quite able to get all the water out and it kept getting my hair wet when I'd use it--gross) and a fly swatter. Then, it was time for me to meet with the Relief Society presidency at Applebee's. We had our meeting there because our 1st counselor is moving and it was kind of her "farewell dinner". I got home around 9:30pm, finished the World Cup match and crashed.

Sunday
Sundays are always a little hectic for us. Our church starts at 11am and Carl has to be there at 8:15 for meetings and then we don't get home until after 2pm. After church this Sunday we watched the World Cup final. Carl was rooting for France so I rooted for Italy (I hate France--I didn't have a very good experience in my travels there and the Italians are much better looking anyway). We were really disappointed in Zidane's exit from the game. I'm really curious to know what was said to him to provoke him to act like that but I'm sure it was bad. That still doesn't mean he should have reacted the way that he did. At any rate, it probably would have ended the same way anyway.

Sunday night was really nice. We relaxed. It was the perfect way to end an unbelievably hectic week.

Monday
Just thought that I'd add...I found a table today at the mall (of all places!). They had one in KB Toys. It has Spongebob on it (which I'm not too thrilled about) but it's going to get trashed anyway (crayons/playdoh/etc...) so I didn't want to get one that was too nice. I think it will work out nicely. I was in a rush to get one because Caleb's preschool teacher is coming tomorrow for the last time this summer (she's been coming once a week) and suggested we have one so he can do some of his learning activities there. We did have our full size card table set up but it wasn't working out that well. I wanted to get it before she came so she can get him used to the idea of doing those certain activities at the table. She said we need to work on him being able to do some activities independently and that way he won't bug me as much when I'm doing other things (like cooking dinner or changing Eva's diaper). We'll see.

The Week That Would Not End

I think I've mentioned already (once or twice) that I had a BUSY week. Now that the new week has started I feel a little more grounded and can revisit the events that transpired (as promised--albeit a little later than I thought).

I think we'll just start with Tuesday.
I've already gone through most of the details of what we did on the 4th. In the morning, we went to Holmes Lake Park for a breakfast and "parade". This picture is of Carl leading the kids in our wagon. Caleb jumped out as soon as they passed me and then Eva rode around solo for the rest of the parade.

After the parade we spent the afternoon watching the World Cup. The next door triplets came over taking cookie orders and then came back with some really cute red, white and blue cookies. Can you tell which color Caleb got?

That evening we went to a friend's house for burgers and fireworks. We stayed for some of the daytime fireworks but left before it got too dark. Those kids were in need of rest (or so we thought). We got home and Caleb and Eva would not go to sleep! So, we stayed up watching fireworks on tv and the kids marched around the house to all the patriotic music.

Wednesday
Wednesday started out like a normal day...except Carl didn't go to work. He was going to but he was working on my computer. That was the day that my remote blogging ended. YEAH! We spent the morning cleaning up the house and the afternoon watching World Cup. The World Cup part probably doesn't surprise you...but why were we cleaning? We had houseguests due to arrive that evening and I couldn't have the house be super messy. They did need a place to sleep, after all.

Our friends, Jen and Cory Thompson (and their 3 kids--all under 5...and their golden retriever), were on their way from Indiana to their new home in Colorado Springs, CO. We had a nice dinner (that I frantically cooked for their 7:30pm arrival--which didn't really take place until just after 9pm). Then, we chatted and got settled in for the night and went to sleep around midnight.

Thursday
We woke up early to see off the Thompsons but they didn't get on the road until after 9am. It was a pretty hectic morning, to say the least. But...we were so glad they came and stayed here! It was nice to see people from Indiana and catch up on where some of our other friends have gone.

This day was Carl's 30th birthday. I didn't get him an actual present because he said he didn't really need anything. He's been buying stuff for himself for the past couple of months and that could count. Not to mention we were going to shell out a fair amount of cash for our "date" later that day.

After the Thompsons left, Carl went to work in Omaha. I got the kids ready for a day long outing and left around 11:30am to meet Carl in Omaha. The kids slept most of the way. I picked up Carl and I had to make a trip to the yarn store. I wish yarn stores were more kid friendly (but, I understand why they aren't--it's the nature of the beast). I can only go when I have someone that is willing to sit in the car with the kids and the only person willing (to be bribed) is Carl. I didn't take too long. I knew what I was after. I bought 1 skein of Cascade 220 and 3 hanks of charcoal sock yarn (all for Christmas gifts). I went to String of Purls. It was my first time there and they have the store arranged by color. It was really pretty but very hard to browse if you're looking for a certain type of yarn. You can't compare it to the other colors unless you carry it all around the store. Back to the main story...

Once I was done shopping, we went to the zoo. It was a really nice day (mid 80's) and the kids were looking forward to it. Every day since then Caleb has been asking to go and see the animals. Here are some cute pics of the kids. They love the aquarium. The sharks and sting rays are always a big hit because you sit in this tunnel and they swim all over and around you. Sitting in there gives me a headache. But, they love it so we stay in there for a while. Last time we went the penguins were the favorite attraction. We saw a little bit of them but they had the lights off in the display so we could only see the ones swimming close to the glass. It was still a big hit with the kids.
Caleb's obsession with Mary Poppins made it impossible to leave the zoo without riding the carousel. I'm standing behind the zebra (yes, I'm that short). Carl wasn't willing to shell out the $1 for Eva to ride. So, he spent the whole ride with a crying girl. Ha ha. Serves him right.

The zoo here in Lincoln is kind of piddly and not worth the cash. I'd rather hoof it on up to Omaha to go to the zoo there. It's really worth it. And, just to prove that we saw some animals...After the zoo, we dropped off the kids with the babysitter (Carl's grad student that lives in Omaha). I think here would be an appropriate place to mention that Caleb didn't have a single potty accident that day! Carl took him to go before we dropped him off and it was the first time he actually went in a toilet that wasn't in our house. Big deal for us and him! YEAH CALEB!

Once we dropped off the kids, we went to eat at Wheatfields. This restaurant is definitely one of a kind. They have a 6 page menu (filled to the brim) and a bakery attached so their dessert menu has almost as many items as the main menu. They had crepes, fondue, wraps, quesadillas, casseroles, steak, seafood, sandwiches, etc... I always get a little worried in restaurants like that because I wonder how they could really be good at producing so many different types of food. Carl got the first thing on the menu (so when we come back, he'll remember what he ordered and can just move down the list). It was a casserole with blue cheese, asparagus, eggplant and some other stuff I would never eat. I got Scampi Scallops on a bed of mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. Their salads are awesome! They have their own dressing and they use real bacon and gruyere cheese! Mmmm. Their butter rolls are also really great. Carl got peach pie for his birthday dessert and I had a caramel apple crepe. We had a hard time walking out of there because we were so full. Carl made me drive the rest of the night so he could "digest".

We headed over to the temple after dinner and did a session. There were a lot of people from our ward there because we had temple cleaning duty that night. After the session we changed into our scrubs and started cleaning. I was the chief feather duster and Carl was the mopper. We were all trying to get our dusters dirtier than the others but to no avail. We found no dust in that whole place. It was the cleanest place I've ever had to clean. But, we did it anyway...and had a good time in the process.

By the time we picked up the kids and drove home, it was almost 1am before we got to bed.

Friday
This was the day that we accidentally slept in until 10am. It threw my whole day off. I think the kids were a little confused, too. But, we managed.

This post is getting long enough and I've got to get some stuff done around the house before Caleb and Eva start to demand things like clean diapers and breakfast. I'll cover the weekend later today or tomorrow.

Lost Time

I think later today I'll have the time and energy to blog about our crazy week at Casa Nelson. It will include some really cute pictures of the kids at the zoo and give you an idea of why the whole Nelson clan slept in until 10AM yesterday without even planning on it! I don't remember the last time I was able to sleep in that late (neither could Carl) but I'm sure it was pre-kids. Even they were pooped beyond belief.

Other items:

I have some requests of my fellow blog readers:

1. Where do you shop online for yarn? I've been having a heck of a time finding good SOLID COLOR sock yarn at a place that charges reasonable amounts for shipping. I also just want a good place to shop online that has good service and good shipping deals. I already know about knitpicks and elann.

2. Where can I find a kid size card table and chairs? Target doesn't have any (except a really cute wooden one w/ 2 chairs that costs about $100), I tried Once Upon a Child, and Walmart.

3. Where do they sell those pop beads? You know the kids blocks that pop together and you can make awesome snakes and huge necklaces? Target, Walmart, the fancy toy shop here in town and Toys R Us don't have them.

Can you tell I've been TRYING to do a little shopping lately? Maybe that's why I'm so tired!

American Idol Footballer?

Separated at birth? France soccer star Franck Ribery sure looks a lot like American Idol finalist Eliot Yamin. Don't you think?

I'm back blogging on my normal computer. It took Carl a while but we think it's fixed. All of my files are on a cd waiting to be put back where they belong. He couldn't save my itunes music. There goes hours and hours of work. Oh well. I'll have to upload all that music again. What else do I have to do? ha ha

Carl's 30th birthday is tomorrow. We are going to Omaha for a big day. He's going to work in the morning and we are going to meet him at the zoo in the afternoon. His grad student, Kim, is going to watch the kids for us in the evening while we go out to eat and then to the temple (for a session and then to help clean it). It's going to be a late night but I think we'll enjoy ourselves...toilets and all. On Saturday we're going to go to a movie (Pirates of the Caribbean!!!). I think that about sums up his birthday week.

Our 4th of July was pretty standard. We went to the breakfast put on by our church, watched the World Cup, and then went to a bbq at a friend's house. We stayed until about 8:30pm and then came home to watch fireworks on tv. Our kids could really care less about fireworks so we spent $0 on them. I don't think they cared. We sure didn't.

I better wrap this up so I can catch today's World Cup match. Carl stayed home from work (to work on my computer) and now he's just not going in. Could it be because France is playing? Hmmm. My francophile is pretty excited that they're in the quarter finals. I think they'll probably win today, but either way I'll be happy. It would be awesome if Portugal could pull it off.

More Remote Blogging

I'm blogging again from the public library today. Still no computer. It's not so bad. We have a computer set up for Caleb in his room and it is connected to the internet. I can still check my email and things. It's just slow and I'm spoiled. I really miss my music and my files. I've been wanting to make this dessert (graham cracker toffee squares---yeah, don't ask about PFA this week) for a party we're going to tomorrow but I don't have the recipe anywhere else except my recipe document in Word. I guess we'll just bring some chips.

Carl's working dilligently on the computer and is doing his best. I'm starting to question his computer savvy. I mean, it was only 2 months ago that he made me this "awesome" computer and said that it was going to be the best computer I ever had. It was pretty good...while it lasted. I think I'd rather have a not so awesome computer that will last longer than 2 months. I've been mentioning that I'd really like a laptop. We'll see how that works out. I know we can't afford one right now---we're busy paying off all of our debt. Guess what? It's working! We've cut our debt by about 30% in the past two months and hopefully soon we won't owe anything (except our mortgage) to anybody (not even you, ERIC!).

Sorry this post isn't more exciting. I don't have any pictures to post, either. I will tomorrow (or whenever I get a chance to do some more remote blogging) because we've got some good 4th of July activities planned. Sayonara.

Knitting, knitting, knitting

This is a knitting blog, after all. You wouldn't know it from my lack of knitting posts lately. Believe it or not, I have been knitting. Up. A. Storm.

First off, let me get my June socks for the Sock-a-Month KAL out of the way. These were made with a 3X1 ribbing in Trekking XXL colorway 107. The socks are super comfy and beautiful. I have enough yarn left to probably make a pair of anklets. This was the yarn I bought right before the Wiggles concert so I've been calling them my "Wiggles" socks. I didn't finish these until this morning and I started to freak out because our computer is out of commission for today and I didn't know how the heck I was going to make the deadline for the knit a long. I'm "remote" blogging from the library. They have wireless and I am on Carl's laptop.
My other knitting is pretty exciting. I'm trying to get rid of my stash. I went to look at what I had and came down with some Sugar n Cream cotton. I'm getting confident enough in my knitting that I figured I could make Eva a tank top without a pattern. I think I did a pretty darn good job. While I was knitting I would just hold it up to a tank top that she has and see if I was close. It worked! Now, I'm doing some different things trying to come up with some different styles and writing out the patterns so I can either sell them on etsy or post them for free here on my website. If you'd like me to knit a tank top for you, I'd appreciate it. I need to make about 4-5 more. If you want one, I'd just need you to pay me for the yarn (a mere $3 for a toddler size--$5 for a larger child). The first 2 people that email me will get them.

You can't tell too much from the pictures but it has a rolled bottom (I'm working on one that doesn't roll up, too...in case people don't like that--I personally like do). It has a subtle design in the solid pink parts and then gradually works up to stripes (pink/white/khaki) on the top. It is worked all the way in the round and I used some double pointed needles for the straps.

That's a Mongolian blue spot on Eva's arm. Not a bruise. No worries, okay?

I'm still working on my Gathering Intentions sweater. I had to get some help from my knitting group last time. The sleeves were coming out WAY TOO LONG. I've started on the back now and will rework the sleeves when I get to a good length on the back. The ladies that I knit with are a lot of help and so knowledgeable! I really appreciate their help.

This isn't knitting but, I've also been doing some more gardening. Here's my latest crop. Probably my best yet!

New Job

A couple of months ago I posted about the desire to make money. I had an idea of something I wanted to do but I wasn't totally sure about it. The timing didn't seem right. Here's some background information...

About 5 years ago I got this silly notion that I wanted to open a bead store. I know very little about beading in general and making jewelry. My main experience came from a little shop on Campus Corner in Norman, OK called The Beadery. I would go there when I was an undergrad to make jewelry. I even made my mom this really cool beaded watch. Probably my best work to date. When we moved to Lafayette, IN there wasn't a store like that anywhere and I just knew that town needed one. So, I dreamt up my store. I named it The Queen Bead. Oh yeah, can't you just see it? I knew I would never really be able to open a bead store (especially with Carl in grad school and knowing we weren't going to be there forever). But, thinking about it made me really happy.

In Indiana, I was a school teacher. High school Spanish. Señora Nelson. Yep, that's how I paid the bills. I also was the queen of Pampered Chef on the side (to pay for Eva's adoption). I think I did a pretty good job at both of those things.

I've been in Lincoln for a year now and I'm starting to feel a little settled (especially now that we have a house). Four months ago I requested information from a company that met most of my criteria (work from home, crafty, cute products, business support). I got it and put it away. I wasn't quite ready. I am now.

Bead Retreat is a company that does in home beading classes. I will be the first coordinator in the area. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Good thing? If I stick with it, I'll be the queen bead retreater in Lincoln. Bad thing--no local support. Here are the things I was concerned about initially.

1. This isn't the kind of thing that people with real beading skills will want or need. You can't design your own jewelry. But, how many people out there really have those skills? They wouldn't really be my customers anyway.

2. They sell kits. To someone like me, this is definitely a good thing. I love to make things myself but I like to follow a pattern. If I had to make up my own jewelry designs, I'd flip out. So, for people like me...this is a good thing. I'm wondering, how many people are really like me?
3. You have to pay to come to a class. For someone to host a bead retreat, your friends have to pay a class fee plus the cost of the bracelet (or whatever is chosen to be made---you get to choose, I like that). You can avoid the class fee by bringing a friend or hosting your own and I think there are ways that I can discount it...but it's still a cost. It would cost each person around $15-20 to attend a class. It would have to be something I really wanted to learn how to do or make to get me to pay that.

Overall, I think it's something that I'm really going to like to do. Carl is really supportive. He's the one that actually talked me into going for it. I think he's tired of me whining about not having something I can do to make money.

I need to have 4 classes set up before I sign up. I already have 2 scheduled. I'm coming to Oklahoma in August and I'll be in Nebraska...forever. You can also look at the catalog and just order without attending a retreat. Any takers?

It's not The Queen Bead, but it's close.

Upcoming

I don't have a lot of time to post today. At least not enough time for the posts that I have planned for the next few days. Here is what you can be expecting.

1. My new job
2. Knitting, knitting, and knitting---lots of cute things including a Christy original.
3. The craft room finally done!

Adventures in Shopping

And now, for the Walmart story.

It was Saturday. I needed milk, a waterproof matress cover, a yoga mat, some treats for my Sunday school class and some other things and Walmart was the only place I could think of that would provide me all of those things in one stop (kind of a necessity with the two kids in tow). We got there around noon so I could bribe my kids with french fries to be good. I parked on the opposite side of the food so we could get the fries on the way out. We walked in and I asked the greeter for a cart for 2 kids. She brought me one. It was broken. Only one side would buckle. I had Eva safely strapped in but Caleb was free to jump out at will. This would not do. I asked for a different cart.

The greeter was really nice (a younger girl) and used her radio to ask the other side if they had a cart. No luck. She called for a cart guy to come. He came and went out to the parking lot. He never came back. I stood there for 10 full minutes before the tears started to flow. Caleb was being okay (I had given him a bouncy ball and he had an empty bag of veggietales fruit snacks that he was "talking" to---hello Bob and Larry!). Eva, as usual, was being very well behaved. I just knew it wasn't going to last much longer and I was losing my patience. I asked for a manager.

A manager came, called on the radio to the cart guy and he said he couldn't find one. The manager left.

After a few more minutes, I asked to speak to a more important manager. This time a lady (one that doesn't have to wear a vest---so she must be important) came to help me. I was crying even more but this time it wasn't because I was sad. I was happy. I was so proud of Caleb. He was being so good! He was happy to be saying hi to EVERY SINGLE person that walked into Walmart. Everyone probably thought I was a total idiot---but I don't care. Caleb was a dream. I couldn't believe how well behaved he was and we were pushing 20 minutes sitting in a broken cart and not moving.

Finally, they found a cart. They brought it to me and we transferred the kids. Guess what? BROKEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I start laughing hysterically (still crying, too) because of my luck. Why does stuff like this happen to me? I know in the grand scheme of things this is really no big deal. It's just a cart. But, in that moment I was wondering when I became a big enough star to be on Punk'd (is that show even still on?).

Two guys (also without vests---I was probably the biggest problem in Walmart that day) came to help the other lady. They brought a screwdriver and took one of the straps from one broken cart and transferred it to the fixed cart. It took them a couple of tries. One time they put two broken straps together and the next time they put it on upside down. But, they got it right. Caleb and Eva were real troopers through the whole thing. I'm the one that lost it.

I told them all thank you and tried to explain that the majority of my crying was because I was happy. They looked at me like I was a nut job. Oh well. I had a cart and didn't want to be hanging out there anymore. I booked it out of there and went shopping.

The managers were trying to explain to me that it was a Saturday and all of those carts must have been in the store being used by customers. As you can imagine, I was going to be on the lookout for people with those carts when I went into the store. I didn't see a SINGLE ONE! Where the heck were all the carts? I was in there for almost an hour...in all the regular kid hangouts (toys, infants, food). I didn't see any other blue kid cart. Ridiculous.

Caleb made it most of the way through shopping. I did have to open up the popsicles before we made it back to the car but that made him forget all about the french fries. Good times.

Review

First off, let me say that I made it. I had a minor mishap yesterday at Walmart that involved three managers, two greeters, a broken cart, and me bawling like a baby at the entrance. That story is going to have to wait for another day. Now I'm going to focus my attention to a very serious matter.

I am quickly becoming an expert on those little drink packets you can put into bottled water. There are some that I like and some that I would like to spit out. I think it's time for a review---for all you consumers out there.

Each brand will be rated from 1-5 (1-gross to 5-almost as good as Pepsi) in the following categories:
1. Taste
2. Ease of opening the packet
3. Floaties--you know, you can shake it and shake it but there are still little powder floaties all in your bottle
4. Price
5. Overall Opinion

Shall we begin?

Crystal Light
1. Taste
a. Lemonade 5
b. Fruit Punch 5
c. Raspberry Ice 2 (personal preference, I think---I don't like raspberry)

2. Ease of opening packet 5

3. Floaties 4

4. Price 3

5. Overall 4.5 The only thing really against Crystal Light is the price.

Walmart

1. Taste
a. Lemonade 4
b. Fruit Punch 3

2. Ease of opening packet 4

3. Floaties 3

4. Price 4

5. Overall 4 Walmart doesn't taste quite as good as the Crystal Light but it is much cheaper and Carl has rubbed off on me enough to choose the Walmart brand over CL if that's where I happen to be shopping.

Hyvee Brand

1. Taste
a. Lemonade 4
b. Fruit Punch 1 This fruit punch made me want to hurl

2. Ease of opening packet 1

3. Floaties 1

4. Price 3

5. Overall 2 Don't buy the Hyvee brand. It's lame.

Target (Archer Farms)

1. Taste
a. Strawberry Lemonade 3

2. Ease of opening packet 3

3. Floaties 3

4. Price 4

5. Overall 3.5 I was expecting more from this one and maybe that's why it scored so poorly. Compared to Crystal Light and Walmart, it was lacking. HOWEVER...they are the only ones I noticed with a Strawberry Lemonade. Too bad it didn't taste so hot.

I hope this post can help you all in your future flavored bottle water endeavors. I'm here to serve you.

Still Counting

It's 10:45pm and Caleb is outside of my room right now playing his guitar. I shouldn't have let him take a nap. He got to sleep in the afternoon and I didn't so I've been going at this since 5:30am. Crap. He just peed in the hallway.
Well, I got that taken care of. I guess now he might not pee in his bed tonight. Gotta look on the bright side, right?

I've been trying to get him to bed since 9pm. I'm pooped. I know that Eva's going to wake up at the crack of dawn . If Caleb gets up before 9am tomorrow I'm going to make sure my next girl's weekend is a 2 week vacation. I'm glad I'm blogging about this so I can show it to him later when he asks for privileges. Prom? Sorry kiddo. Remember when Daddy was in FL and you pooped and peed all over Mommy and her new house? Remember how you got up super early and stayed up late? You can't be trusted. No prom for you.

Goodnight.
26 hours to go.

Counting Down

There are lots of things I miss when Carl is away. I thought I'd make a list.

1. Nobody to pick up dead rabbits. The neighbor kid, Brandon, comes by EVERY DAY to ask me for jobs to do so he can make money. He might not ask me anymore because I finally gave him one! He made $1.26 and a brownie to pick up the dead rabbit that was in our backyard.

2. Usually the only way I can make it through the day without having a mental breakdown is knowing that Carl will be home at 5:30pm. It's hard for me to keep my cool when I know he won't be home until 1 am Sunday morning. Only 42 more hours to go!

3. It's not fun watching my nighttime tv alone. Caleb doesn't laugh at my jokes. Carl and I would have had lots of laughs watching Master of Champions. Didn't anyone else waste an hour of their lives last night by watching that piece of junk?

4. It's 7:30am (as I type this---I have a feeling I'm going to have to save it and finish it later since Caleb is climbing on me right now). Normally, at 7:30am the grownups are awake and the kids are asleep. Caleb has been up for 2 hours already and Eva just barely went down for a nap. It's been a long morning and I don't think I'm going to get a shower unless I go to the Y. I guess I'm going to the Y today.

5. One thing I don't miss about having Carl gone is being able to sleep with the fan on all night. Carl gets too cold but I usually get too hot during the night and wish it was on. I also get to spread out and take up the whole bed if I want to. Good stuff.

I can't think of anything else and I'm really getting beat up right now. Caleb's teacher said to make him wait for things (like playing on the computer). I don't know if she realizes how many bruises and fat lips I get by having him wait. Sometimes it's just so much easier to give him his way. Not this time. This is my computer time. He can deal. I think he can wait two more minutes for me to check my email.

42 hours to go.

My Little Yogi

Yesterday we walked to the library and back. That wasn't enough of a workout for me so I had this grand idea that today, I would try yoga. The only yoga I've ever done before was on a dvd from the library. A dvd for kids. I didn't finish it.

There is a group of ladies that get together at the church on Tuesdays for a yoga class. It's taught by a real yoga instructor. I went with Hollie. She actually rode her bike to the church. I hope she made it home okay. Are you home, Hollie?

We had never been before and didn't have yoga mats. The teacher got kind of miffed at us and said we should invest in them if we are going to keep coming. Well, gee lady, let me get through one class first. It started out easy enough. I learned how to breathe...yoga style. Woohoo. Then she made us, like, bend and stretch. Anybody want to see pictures of a fat lady doing yoga? I didn't think so. Here's one of Caleb. He actually did pretty well.

There were some things I wasn't able to do because of my wrist. It's still hurting from my competitive knitting injury. Granted, it doesn't hurt like it used to but I can't really put a ton of weight on it (specifically, my ton of weight). Caleb took over during that portion of class. I tried to keep Eva occupied (she kept escaping from the gym since she can open the doors herself now). As soon as I got out the camera, she forgot the doors and ran to be right in front of me. What a ham.

Here's another picture of my little yogi doing downward facing dog (or something like that).
To be honest, I think yoga is okay. I think this now in retrospect because right after the class I was pretty sure I was never coming back. Now that I've had several hours for the pain to set in, I kind of like it. I like the feeling of a good workout. I'll go back. I'm not quite ready to invest in a yoga mat (I asked for one on freecycle.org) but I'll give it a fighting chance. Next week I'll take my wrist brace and ibuprofen. That should cover it.

Yesterday a walk, today yoga...I wonder what I'll do tomorrow?

*In other news, Carl's leaving for his "guys" weekend tomorrow and will be gone until Saturday. Actually, it's a work conference at Amelia Island, FL. I'm sure he'll have fun but I'll be home alone with the kids! Aargh! Should be fodder for some "fun" blog posts.

Ipoddy Goodness

When Carl switched over my computer to the "new and improved" one he built, he left all of my music on the hard drive of the other one. It wouldn't have been a big deal but I erased all of the songs off of my ipod. It was an accident. Anyway, I needed to have some good tunes so I could start taking my walks again and get back into going to the Y regularly (we had a break for potty training--which is going better, btw). I started to upload my cds from my collection into itunes. *if anyone is planning on getting me a gift anytime soon, an itunes gift card would be awesome...I'm sure Carl would love one for his birthday on July 6th (the big 3-0!)* Between Carl (the music junkie) and myself (former cd queen and dj of the ultra hip singles dances), we have a lot of music. It's just not current. I don't remember the last cd I actually purchased. But, going through our collection was pretty sweet. I can't believe all these songs that I love.

1. Mercury Falling. Sting. This cd was one that we used to listen to before we were married. Good for kissing.

2. Am I the only one that's a sucker for this guy? He doesn't have a mullet anymore but he always will in my head when I'm working out to Satisfied. Right Here Waiting and Angelia made it to my "knitting" playlist.

3. Did I know that there were so many songs that I liked by Bryan Adams? Summer of '69, All for Love, Run to You, Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman, etc... You know you love them, too.

4. Beautiful Day isn't the only song I have of U2's. Remember this one? I didn't either until the other day.

5. Another Night. You might have to click on the audio link to remember this one.

I have more and more I could list but for now I think I've reached my limit. Caleb is another music afficionado and is begging to hear "Computer Lazy Town"--which equals www.nickjr.com radio. Lucky me!

Garden

For the first time ever, I have a garden. I've never considered myself the kind of person that could garden. But, now that we have a house...I feel encouraged and somewhat obligated to try it. We have major bunnies in our neighborhood and I'm not so much for digging around in the dirt so I am starting with a container garden on the deck off of our master bedroom.

In the containers from left to right we have planted: Back row-- bell peppers, cucumbers, pumpkins/radishes (in one container), jalapeños/hungarian wax peppers, salad mix, sweet potato
Front row---carrots, rosemary, basil/lemon balm, oregano/garlic chives/lavendar, pansies.

I used some of the garlic chives today in my mashed potatoes. Yum-O!

The wax peppers look pretty good but I think I'm going to wait until they turn red and then dry them and make powder. At least for the first one or two.

I noticed my bell peppers are starting to come out! How cute is that?
I don't want to forget that it's Father's Day today. Carl bought himself an mp3 player. I worked really hard to get the kids to cooperate and not make a total mess for this garden stone. We had a few problems with the "ers". Can you tell? ha ha. The handprints came out okay which is all I'm really worried about. Caleb was excited that we made an octagon (only his most favorite shape). All in all it's been a good day. I should probably call my dad now.
Happy Father's Day to all you dads and dads to be out there!

For the Grandparents

I have nothing too exciting to blog about today. However, there is an excellent post on adoption over at Feminist Mormon Housewives if you feel so inclined. I thought I'd include some pictures of the kids.

Caleb had a good day yesterday. He didn't have any accidents (he also didn't go #2) and most of the time he came to me to ask to go. I usually have to ask him. I say "First potty, then popsicle" when I know he needs to go. The other day I made a chocolate cake. Caleb calls all cake "birthday cake". Yesterday he came up to me on his own and said, "first potty, then BIRTHDAY CAKE!". He got his cake.

Eva has learned how to climb up the ladder to the swingset. She climb up and slide down all by herself. She really is adventurous. She's also getting 4 more teeth so that's not so fun.

Dirty Little Secrets

Carl's obsession with free stuff has reached new heights. I'm not allowed to blog about it because he is too embarassed. Suffice it to say, it's pretty good. It is providing me with much amusement. I'll probably get to share the story eventually, but not yet. All in due time.

Visuals

This post is about Caleb. I'm really starting to regret not putting him into summer school. I just had to make the decision right after he started and I didn't know how it was going to go. We're going to be alright but the whole family is happier when he goes, especially Caleb. I'm going to try and make things structured for him as much as possible but it's been difficult, to say the least. Potty training is not helping.

There are a few things that I've been thinking about with Caleb's autism. I think I've dealt with the fact that he has it. It was actually a relief to know that there is a reason behind his rage and it's not just my poor parenting skills or an inherent violent trait. I'm still struggling with how to deal with this in the public. It's funny to think about this because I thought my biggest problem would be dealing with the fact that he is black and we are white. I don't even really think about that anymore.

I'm starting to wonder whether it would be "easier" if Caleb had some sort of physical manifestation of autism. It's just that he looks so "normal". It breaks my heart when people try to talk with him and he won't answer. Caleb knows how to count past 100 now and he recognizes all of the letters in the alphabet. He can even draw most of them now. He knows all of his shapes. He can't pass a stop sign now without saying "OCTAGON!". He knows the words to every single song he has ever heard (no exaggeration). He can even sing "Spoonful of Sugar" with Carl in harmony. The kid has some skills. But, if you ask him what his name is...he won't answer. Sure, if you catch him at the right moment he might say the right word but most of the time he'll say something like "triangle". He knows you asked him a question and he knows he's supposed to answer. He just doesn't know what the answer is so he just says something familiar to him. I'm at the stage where I don't want to have to explain why he won't answer those simple questions but I feel like I should. I don't know how to handle this yet. I don't want to announce to the world that he has autism. But, then again...I do. I don't want them to treat him differently or pity him or anything like that...but I do want them to recognize that he clearly does have some special needs and needs some help with things. My struggle of the day.

We have been finding some success with using pictures to communicate. This is especially helpful with transitions. Here are some samples of the pictures we use with him.

I have a little poster that I can put these pictures on (they have velcro on the back) and make him a schedule for the day. He's not quite to the level where this works all of the time. But, I can use certain pictures to help him when he doesn't know what's going on. I can show him the car and the stroller and he knows we're going somewhere and he'll get to ride in the stroller. They say that eventually this will cut down on his meltdowns. I sure hope so. I'm sick of getting hit all day. He hits me. He goes to time out. He hits me. More time out. His therapist said to keep doing it, but after months of no results I'm thinking that it's not really working. I have no other options at the moment so I plug on.

Caleb's preschool teacher is the one doing the home visits this summer. She comes once a week and is doing an assessment with Caleb. We're going to work on getting him to have more communication skills and she even got him to sit on the potty...TWICE! He's got some sensory issues with sitting on the toilet (when he does go, he stands up--which doesn't quite work for the poo poo situation). She said that you could really tell he didn't like sitting on the potty and she sympathized with my struggle. That made me feel a little better but I'm still picking poop up off the floor everyday. At least Caleb is more fun than a dog.

Chivas de Guadalajara

In 1996-1997, I lived in and around Guadalajara, México. When I actually lived in the city of Guadalajara, it was in a house just blocks from the stadium. Not just any stadium. The stadium of the Chivas. When we would come home at night, the streets would be packed with fans and vendors. Even in our house we could tell when the Chivas would score. It was pretty exciting. I don't know why fútbol isn't more popular in the US. I think it is amazing and I haven't been able to get enough of the World Cup games. Granted, I do enjoy having DVR that allows me to fast forward during some of it. But, this is not for my lack of enthusiasm. It is more because I don't really have tons of extra time to sit around watching it. I've got to skip to the "good parts".Mexico played Iran today. They won handily; 3-1. It was poetry in motion to see the way they play. Carl was wondering why I am so fascinated by the sport. I've got to admit that it helps that most of the players are really good looking and them running around on the field is my version of "Baywatch". Most of all, I admire the sport. So, you'll know what I'll be doing this month. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLL! Oh yeah, and I'll be rooting for México.

Count Your Blessings

We just made it back from church. If you're unfamiliar with the LDS church, you should know that we meet for 3 hours. The first hour is our main meeting all together, next we have a Sunday School where we break up for classes (I teach 12-13 yr. olds, Carl teaches new members/visitors, and Caleb goes to the nursery...3 more months before Eva gets to go!), and the third hour I meet w/ the women and Carl meets w/ the men. Fun times. Really. I love it. However, 3 hours is a long time to Caleb and I was worried about the potty training. Guess what? No accidents today. He made it through the whole 3 hours without peeing and/or pooping in his pants. Woohoo!

Never Been Kissed

Have you seen the movie Never Been Kissed? I've seen it more than once and I just watched it again last night. It reminded me again how much I love the end of this movie. It is one of my all time favorite movie kisses. Is it just because it is Michael Vartan? Possibly. Part of it is that he doesn't give an excuse for being late until AFTER he kisses her. He just runs down and kisses her. Good stuff.

What are your all time favorite movie kisses?

Chocolate

I'm not feeling well. All I want to eat is some chocolate. This is kind of out of character for me because usually I'd go for something else like bread or pizza (I love carbs). But, right now it's a real shame (or a blessing) because I don't have any fattening treats around (darn weight watchers) and I really need a Twix.

Just because I want one doesn't mean that I need it. Please people that live around here...don't feed the fat girl! I just need to whine about it, that's all.

I'm off to eat a big bowl of salad with as much dressing as I can handle. I've got to do something wild!

Bake Off

Did anyone see the 2006 Pillsbury Bake-off special on Food Network? Every year I see the special I resolve to make up my own spectacular Pillsbury recipe. Why do I never do this? It's about everything I believe in (using prepackaged food to create something delicoso). *Speaking of delicioso...Caleb copies the backpack from Dora by saying, "yum yum yum yum yum deliciYUMso"--so cute!* Back to the contest. They don't have the information up yet for the next contest (if they do and I just didn't find it---email me or comment, please!) but that doesn't mean I can't start thinking about some awesome creations. My goal? I will enter at least one recipe delicioso to the Pillsbury bake-off.

There's another contest I'm entering. It's the Lancaster County Fair. I have got some awesome knitting (remember the gold medal winning Snowdrop Shawl?), crocheting, and a pretty good banana bread to enter. I might work on my baking skills and get some more goodies to enter. It costs $3 per category to enter. So, it would cost me $6 to enter the textiles and baked goods contests. Then, each product I enter is eligible to win up to $4 each. Think of the major money I could win! *sarcasm* But, it's all for the glory with me. I'll wear my ribbons proudly (and I better win some!).

But why stop at the county fair when I can conquer the STATE FAIR? Yep, that's right. I'll be there with my hand made goodness. I don't know what the prizes are but I'm sure they've got some sweet ribbons. The title of state fair winner is pretty prestigious (I know you all wish you could be state fair winners, right?) so I'll try not to let it go to my head when I win. *My parents are from Utah. I've never lived there. Unfortunately, I speak like a Utahn. Go back to that last sentence before the asterisk. "when I win" If you listen to me say this the only way you can tell the difference between the way I say 'when' and 'win' is context. Same thing with "whale" and "well". What's the deal (or in my case...dill)?*

Kids are waking up and I'm sure I've got some pee pee mess to clean up downstairs. Life is good.
