My New Sewing Machine

I bought one. I went to four different stores and finally decided on this Singer 7466.* I know some people warned me about Singers. I know some other people told me to get a Singer. Only time will tell how this one works out for me. The price was right (within my Carl approved budget), it does everything I could imagine using it for (one step button holes-woohoo!), and is light. I'm already making a mental list of everything I want to make with it. I know one of the first things is a quilt for Carl. He finally decided that we can get rid of his t-shirts that are over 10 years old that he's been saving for sentimental reasons. Before I cut up the important bits for the quilt, he wants to take pictures of them. I was joking with him that he'll need to get a new wallet so he can put all of those pictures in there and show them to people like they are his kids or something. He said I probably shouldn't give him any ideas.

*I didn't purchase it from this e-tailer, I just used it as a link for information. Mine came from Husker Sew & Vac.

  1. Next time I see Carl, I'll ask to see his "kids". Husker Sew and Vac is where I bought my vacuum (I'm never sure how to spell that one)! And let me know how you like it. I'm ready to toss my sewing machine.

I think a Singer is a great choice. Yes, I've heard what people say about them too. But for your purposes, for a starter machine, I think it's perfect. It has great features, and if you really fall in love with sewing, at some point you can upgrade to something else if you want. Or you may find that this machine will always serve your purposes well. It's not a final, lifetime decision. So congratulations! I look forward to talking sewing with you like we talk knitting.

  4. I think Singers are great, too. I use the the one mom got for her high school graduation in 1973 and it still works great. It's big and heavy, but that's because it's actually made of metal. It's also aged to that weird shade of yellow that white plastic turns to, but what do you expect after 30+ years?

  5. I have two singers. One which was a treadle that was my gandmothers. I got it when she died in 1960. The other is a portable in a black box which was my mothers -- probably purchased in the 50's. Both work perfect. I can service them. They just sew! Nothing extra. I love them both. For several years I made everything that my grandmother wore, my mother wore, and I wore and I sewed a lot for my kids, especially my daughter. I did cast a wandering eye on the sergers when we had our Enrichment night and made the blankets. But,alas, I am probably not going to sew enough now to warrant the investment. Have fun with you wonderful new machine!

  6. I think I'm really going to like this machine. I just need a few hours alone to sit and mess with it. I'm looking forward to getting obsessed with a new hobby!

  7. I made a quilt with all of Alan's old t shirts. It was a Christmas gift a long time ago. I was actually just tired of the pile of old t-shirts in his closet!

I had a Singer from 1970 to 2005, and it worked well until about 2004. (It was a wedding gift)
I now have a Janome, but I heard lots of bad things about it at my quilt guild board meeting last night, and so I am wishing I had purchased the Bernina!
I think you will enjoy sewing, Christy. I have heard that you need to stabilize the t-shirt fabric before you sew it into a quilt. No personal experience though.

  9. My friend out here has made a few quilts out of t-shirts. I wish I would of thought of it 10 years ago.

We have a quilting interest group out here and I love it! I've made a few quilts, but I'm excited to learn new patterns!

Have fun with it! I can't wait to get a new one. I've been using a very old (80's) Brother. I found it in my old apartment in Provo and no one claimed it. I'm thinking someone left it behind. I've been using it for about 8 years now.

  10. so cool! i was sewing shorts for my daughter and broke a needle on my new Necchi machine, now it's not working.( i have to take it and get if fixed). and it's NEW.. stupid me.. i so need to learn how to fix the darn thing myself. i've never heard anything bad about a singer. maybe i don't run with the right crowd.. or wrong crowd. LOL . my mom has one she still used and has had for YEARS like at lease 30 most likely. i bought mine pre used not too long ago and it was an upgrade from the plastic brother i had for 7 years.. now i've got metal.. so it's heavier than the brother but not that heavy... ok i'm going on and on..

Happy sewing! I look forward to seeing Carl's t-shirt quilt someday. If we made Mark one from his old shirts, it would cover my house!

  12. Janet-Mark has some of the best t-shirts around. I think a quilt with some of his favorites would be so awesome!

Now I'm jealous! You have a new Singer!! My daughter made a quilt out of t-shirts. There is a bonding material that you can iron onto the back of the t-shirt fabric that stabilizes them. The squares really turned out nice. She had a booklet on making a quilt from t-shirts so I know they're around.
