Who R U?

Just a little food for thought for myself today. Please excuse the indulgence.

I'm working really hard on trying to figure out exactly who I am. What defines me? Do I really "get" me? When you strip off my "titles" (Carl's wife, Caleb & Eva's mom, daughter, sister, friend, etc...), what is left? What kind of person am I and/or what kind of person do I want to be?

Anyone else experiencing an identity crisis at the moment?

  2. I'm currently comfortable, but I did go through a major shift a few years ago. It took a leap of faith to recognize and interpret my experiences and feelings as they were instead of within the framework I'd thought was the one right answer. It was really hard, but worth it. Let me know if you want to talk about it.

  3. Not right now, but I seem to do the same about once a year. Fixing it varies from learning a new skill and mastering it to finding and reading some really great book. (Both alone, non-mommy/wife activities.)

    However, I have found that blogging has helped me discover quite a bit about myself. :)

  5. Oh yeah. All the time. I have no idea who I am anymore. I got used to who I was for 24 years, and then all that changed...especially after haviing kids. It's hard to only label myself as a mom...there's more to me than that, but I am definitely not the same definition of myself that I once was. I am still trying to figure it out. It's rough!

  6. I don't think I am trying to figure out who I am more than I am figuring out who I want to be. It seems as if we live our lives in stages and who we are changes with each of those stages.

    Now that the boys are all getting older, I need to figure out what I want to do next and then how to get there.

    You must have seen Oprah's show with Marcus Buckingham recently. It was on "Taking Control of your life", kind of applies to working people, but I took the free online workshop on and applied it to mommy-hood, so great!
    Basically, take all the tasks you have in a week and right down the specific things that give you strength (joy, elation, can't wait to do it again) and the weaknesses (drain you, absolutely hate it, give you anxiety). This totally reveals who you are and how you can shift the balance to things that give you power and joy, and reframe your weaknesses to make them enjoyable to.

    I do remember feeling this way when my kids were little and I was a SAHM. Now that everyone's grown up and I have more time and energy for myself, I am very happy!
