Talk About Tuesday

Let's talk a little about kitchen organization. Peter Walsh told me to organize my kitchen. This weekend I gave Carl a task and this is what we came up with.

This cabinet above our ovens is high and deep. I'm short so even on a step stool I can't reach the very back. We have been putting our cereal, oats, granola bars, and pretzels in there. When I asked Carl to empty it out so we could start fresh, there were EIGHT boxes of mostly empty Rice Krispies in there. They just kept getting shoved to the back and forgotten. There were lots of other things in there as well.

We brainstormed and tried to come up with the best way to utilize the amount of space and still make it accessible to a shorty like me.

Check this out. See that one box of cereal? Carl rigged up an undermount drawer thingie to some wood and came up with this!

There are 8 boxes total that fit on the pull-out. We are going to use the other side of the cabinet for oats and snacks but haven't quite figured out the best way for that yet.

This picture shows the other side where he attached a leftover piece of our bathroom vanity top to the side. This keeps us from pushing the boxes over too far so they won't slide in and out of the cabinet.

It isn't the prettiest of solutions, but it works for us!

  3. That's such an awesome idea! I have shorty issues with cabinets, too, so I'll have to tuck that away for future use. :)

  9. I think this is an absolutely awesome solution! I'm a super shorty, so I can relate to where you're coming from. Give your husband a high five from me.

I also love Peter Walsh, although I've not read his books. I wish they hadn't canceled Clean Sweep.

We have pullouts in our deep cabinets and I LOVE them. I'd put them in every cabinet if I could.

  12. That is awesome!! What a great idea. My parents had a cabinet like that over our fridge and they put a door in the right hand side of it so that it could be accessed from the front and the side. Maybe that could be a solution for the other side of the cabinet?? I don't even use my cabinet over the fridge right now!!

I couldn't help laughing out loud at how clever that solution is! Carl rocks!

If you have cereal in bags or oatmeal in round cartons, you could transfer it to one of those rectangular Tupperware containers for cereals. Then it would fit the pull-out.

  15. I love my pullouts. I'm a shorty too. In my cabinet over the stove I keep my special baking pans(Bundt & other shapes) rolling pin, cookie cutters. I have my mixing bowls right in the front so I can grab them if I stretch a little.
