My Village Pantry

I've spent the last few days getting my pantry organized. It's gotten a little out of control and I have been having problems finding food that I know I bought. I made a master shopping list and rearranged the pantry, freezer, and refrigerator. I'm good to go.

Yesterday I took a mini-shopping trip to Super Saver. This is the grocery store I shop at most often. It is not as inexpensive as Wal-Mart but they are closer and don't have all that other stuff that I want to buy (which makes it a more expensive trip in the end). I listed the order of ingredients on my list by my preferred route through the store. I know have an excellent list of all the foods we ever buy so I can just mark the ones we need when we're close to out.

Back to Super Saver...Wendy blogged about seeing a mouse there last year and every time I go I try not to think about it. I'm sure there are mice at a lot of places I go and I'm okay. Well, yesterday I saw one with my own eyes. It ran right in front of me. I'm trying hard to reconcile the fact that I need and want to shop there but there are mice running around. Surely there are mice at other supermarkets, right? Or, do I just need to rearrange my list to fit another grocery store?

  1. Do they have a public restroom? I heard you can judge a lot by the cleanliness of the bathroom. Maybe that was just for restraunts...

Christy, sorry I'm a bad blogger! I'll get back into it, I promise!

  2. I went tonight and told them I saw a mouse. I didn't tell them it was yesterday. The lady said that they had an exterminator there yesterday and hopefully things will get better soon.

  3. I know it is yucky to see a mouse in any food establishment -- restaurant or grocery store BUT,I'm guessing that grocery stores have a constant battle with mice for three reasons. 1. They have food which the mice want. 2. They are warm inside (in the winter). 3. They probably leave doors open a lot while loading and unloading trucks and the mice sneak in. If they exterminate regularly, they should keep it under control. BUT I have never heard of anyone seeing a mouse at any other grocery. If they were exterminating that may have "spooked" the mouse into coming out during the day. Usually they are out during the night, I think.

I have seen birds at super saver, which really isn't a pleasant thought either, though not as yucky (for some reason) as mice.

  5. Silly Christy, certainly the mouse was there stocking up for his little mouse family for our big storm tonight!!

Seriously. . .was he in the baby food aisle? Close to the sweet potatoes? And I'm sorry my little post makes you worry every time you shop. .

    . . .and now yours will make me worry. . . .

  6. I don't like to hear this, I shop at Super Saver all the time. Once I bought a case of Ramen noodles. When I got it home I looked down in the box and there was mouse poop!!! Well, of course I returned it. I still shop there, BUT now I might just rethink that one. I certainly inspect everything a little more now.

  7. Oh my grody gross! I don't know if I would trust the "cleanliness" of the store if I saw a mouse there. I used to work at Sea World, and there were always rats running around at night....but that was outside, and not where you purchase groceries. Yuck! I don't think I could continue shopping there on a regular basis. At least don't buy food that is not sealed in a very sealed, airtight container!

  8. I'd hate to put all of that organization to waste, but I have to say that I have never seen a mouse at a food place before. Two sightings is not good.

On the other hand, as long as you're examining your produce for nibbles and your cans for dents you should probably be fine. I grew up in the woods and we had a real mouse problem in our home pantry. We were just careful and I don't think anything really bad happened.

  9. Glass half full: Maybe the store is so clean that the mouse is so desperate for food it is willing to come out during the day with lots of activity.

Glass half empty: It is so comfortable there that it doesn't feel inhibited about walking about in broad daylight.

    I don't know what I'd do!

  10. I was surprisingly okay when I shopped there. I probably won't be buying any of the bulk foods (store in barrels) from there and I haven't had any problems with their produce.

I've lived in places with mice before so I figure this certainly isn't any worse than that.

Christy it's been a long time since I visited your blog and this was a great post to read! I'm sorry about the mouse, but am more interested in hearing about your pantry inventory list. Would you mind sharing it here or maybe emailing me about it? Thanks! And I hope the next time you go shopping your trip is mouse free!

PS You are definitely one of my favorite organization hereos!

  12. I agree with MC Lynch, there's just no keeping mice 100% out of a place like a grocery store (or a pioneer museum that I'm awfully fond of). I think you're safe to shop there.

  13. Just try not to think about what our food encounters at all of the big warehouses before it gets to the supermarket. Somehow a mouse seems better than a rat or a roach. Did you hear about the KFC-Taco Bell in NY?
