More Language Mishaps
This one is for Sugar Daddy, my resident francophile. I've seen on a couple of websites now the use of "wa-la". OUCH! Is it really much harder to type, "Voilà"? Okay, maybe it is if you want to include the accent (ALT+133). But even voila is better than wa-la. You're not even supposed to pronounce it like wa-la! Oh my.

This is one of my pet peeves! I've wondered (complained, actually) about this phenomenon for a while, and I'm pretty sure that people don't type "wa-la" because it's easier -- they do it because they don't realize that the word is actually "voilà." They don't seem to realize that it's French. Or perhaps they're some of those "Freedom fries" people and they just can't stand to give the French credit for such a lovely, useful word.

ReplyDeleteI've got to aagree with anne. I think that you see wa-la so often because people don't realize that the word is actually voila´ (I can't remember the shortcut on the Mac).
