Potty Training w/ UPDATE

As soon as the Frog gets up this morning, I will be entering the unknown (at least to me) world of potty training. I imagine that I won't be able to blog much as most of my time today will be looking at my son's nether-region and averting potential disasters. This is going to be fun!

Update: We're taking a break for a few hours to assess the situation and go to the church. We were called in for an interview. I'm probably going to get another calling. Yippee. Anyway, about the potty training...He's fighting it. He started crying, begging for a diaper. He was holding it while he was sitting on the potty and as soon as he would get down, he would go. This is what we're thinking...we're going to use the stepstool and just have him go standing up from the get-go. I don't think this little break is going to hurt our, um, progress.

Just a tip I used for both girls. Use an egg timer or your stove timer and have it go off every 20 mins. When it goes off have Frog go sit on the potty....errr, I mean stand by it...LOL! (can ya tell I have girls?) then even if he doesn't go let him put a sticker on a chart or something like that. Just so he gets in the routine. Eventually he gets a sticker for going and then we would let the girls fill up a sheet and then they would get a special treat. (Toy from the dollar store, special trip to the park...whatever.) If you need any more advise I would be happy to share. Good Luck!

Dave was just a leaky boy so I had to get him to go every 5 minutes for the first day, every 10 minutes the second day and so on. If I waited longer then that then his training pants would be wet. Darn those little boys...

  5. This really sucks. I've been taking him every ten minutes and he'll pee on the floor either right before or right after I take him. We're on his 5th pair of underwear and he's only been up 2 hours! Oh my.

  6. My experience with this is that after a few days of more accidents than successes, it flip-flops to more successes than accidents. How long that takes all depends on Frog, though. I used the timer with Natalie and Tristan, not as much with Caroline. While training her, one of those packets from Kandoo arrived with it's own chart, stickers, certificate of achievement, and a little door-knob hanger that demonstrates the (ahem) procedure. It really worked for her. So did the My Little Pony toy I displayed near the bathroom and told her she could have when she filled in her chart. (gotta love Target clearance) She is almost a year older than Frog though and some things were easier to explain the delayed gratification to her.

After 4 boys...here is some unsolicited advice...if he really doesn't want to go, don't do it. he won't go to kindergarten in diapers. :) I forced one of my boys and paid dearly for it until he was 4 - lots of power struggles, wetting his pants and bed (the bed until 6). With the last one, we waited until he showed that he wanted to go and after running around bare bottomed for three days, he was done. Please don't be offended by my advice. It's all about who has control...you don't want it to be you.

  8. Just ignore my bad grammar in my reply. I think I meant to say 'some things like delayed gratification were easier to explain to her.'

  9. Oh, and my son is indeed attending Kindergarten in diapers because he refuses to poop on the toilet. (when you're 5, it just isn't a "potty" anymore) Of all the kids, I was the most lax in his training-so the answer is 'you just can't win.'

  10. Oh my, this will be interesting to see. I can get some advice too:) We kind of started gabe, but not really. He goes pee standing on a stool but deffinetly not all the time. We first started by putting a few cheerios in the potty and telling him to hit & sink them. He thought that was pretty cool, and wanted to put a ton in. We kept a little jar of "targets" in the bathroom. After a few weeks I took them out without him there and he didn't even notice. He has gone poop on the toliet a few times but dosen't like to so that. Its probably up to me spending a few days of what you are doing... I'm just not up to that yet. GOOD LUCK, I hope all goes well!!
