Follow, Follow Me

A few weeks ago Blogger came up with a new "following" feature. I decided to try it out. Kudos to my former student (and chuzma) JennieO for being the first to follow me! You get una estrella dorada!

Here are the details if you want to find out more how to follow someone's blog or have followers on your own. All you really need to do is click on the widget in my sidebar (to the left of your screen). Try it! I think you'll like it! I love how it is compatible with google reader (another one of my favorite things).

Thanks to Kelby, the stars aligning, and some lovely sponsors, I get to go to BlogHer 2009!!! It will be sometime in July and somewhere in the US and I will be there. For sure!

Don't know what a BlogHer convention is? I only know how awesome it can be by living vicariously through other bloggers. There are parties, classes, and Rocco DiSpirito!!! Okay, Rocco might not be at BlogHer 2009...but that won't make it any less fabulous.

I have 10 months to prepare.

What to wear?

Anyone want to plan on coming along?

Dish Rag Tag--The Sequel

Last year my team came out victorious. This year we're hanging in there but it doesn't look like we'll be the first team to finish. But, that isn't going to be because I didn't get the dishcloth out as soon as possible! My package arrived moments ago and after I'm done with this blog post, I'll start knitting! My dish rag should be in the mail later this afternoon to the next one on the list.

So, if you'll excuse me. I've got some knitting to do. Sometimes being a competitive knitter takes sacrifices. :)

Helping a Friend

Some of my blog readers may know my friend, Brenda. She kept me happy and sane when Carl was on his mission and when I came back from mine, she had my back at all times.

Last week, Brenda's husband was killed in an automobile accident. She is 8 months pregnant with her third son. He was self employed and I know that they are going to need some financial help.

I don't have much at the moment to spare but I do have a lot of paper and an online shop and a blog that I can use to promote said paper and shop.

I made some Thank You card sets. There are six cards for $10. For every card set sold, I'll send $10 to Brenda's fund.

Curious George

My kids love Curious George. They love the movie. They love the books. When I found out he'd be at Barnes & Noble, I knew we'd find a way to be there too.

We weren't alone. Julie brought Bella and Wendy brought Whitney & Simon.

Eva asked me all morning when we were going to see Curious George. She looked for him in every car we drove by. She looked for him all over the book store. When he finally showed up it was all I could do to keep her from running over all the little kids to get to the front of the line.

She finally made it to the front to give him a big hug! Smiles all around.

I Made it Myself-- Dandelion Bag

This week I've been trying to build up some inventory for some upcoming craft fairs. Unfortunately, this didn't really happen. I just thought about building up some inventory for craft fairs. I did manage to sew three little drawstring tote bags earlier last week. One is going into my etsy shop, one got sent to a friend, and the other is being held for the craft fairs.

I used this really cute dandelion fabric and lined it in a light blue. I don't know if you could consider this an original pattern because I took a bag that I love and tried to copy it as best as I could. The drawstring runs through a channel and comes out through buttonholes. These bags are just the right size for a small knitting project (SOCKS!) or a purse when you don't want to carry around a big one. It measures approx. 8 3/4" wide by 9 1/4" tall.

The handles are about 5 inches long. It is 100% cotton fabric in shades of blue.

I bought some more fabric last week that will make it into these bags. I got two coordinating fabrics--one with hoot owls and the other with stripes. That will be so much fun to sew!

What did you make this week?

If you'd like to participate in I Made It Myself, take a moment to read through the FAQs and then post away!

Color Select and Rainy Days

I can't stop using the color select button on my camera. It is so much fun! I took these the other day when it was raining and we were waiting for the bus. I told the kids to make their mad faces.

*Yes, Caleb is wearing "hair". He wears it while he is waiting for the bus and then we take it off when the bus comes.

I haven't been able to craft much these past couple of days with Carl being gone. By the time the kids get to bed, I'm too tired or I have a bunch of other stuff I need to do (like take out the trash and clean up after dinner). I can definitely see a difference in my mood when I don't get to make anything creative in a day or two. These pictures are the closest I've been able to come. So, enjoy.

String Beans

Last weekend Carl took Caleb to an event put on by the Autism Family Network and a few other agencies from town. It was an ice cream social and a concert put on by the String Beans. Eva and I were going to attend as well but about 20 minutes before we left, Eva fell asleep and there was no way I was going to wake her up. Here are a few of the pictures from that event.

Gone Fishing

Here is the video footage from last week's fishing clinic that was on the local news.

This weekend might not be as exciting as the last. Carl is away (he left at 5:30 this morning) until Saturday night. He is at some wood badge clinic for scouts. And...next weekend is his monthly campout with the boys. Being a scoutmaster sure keeps you busy! But, no worries...I'll be in Kansas City with Kerry for a SU convention the last weekend of the month!

Eva's First Day of School

On a whim, I signed Eva up for a 4 hr. a week preschool. It is at the rec center connected to Caleb's school. There are 3 other kids enrolled at the moment.

She was so excited she didn't really want to pose for any pictures this morning. These were the best I could do.

While she was in school, I went to the dentist for a major cleaning. Deb's sister, Julie, was my hygienist. I won't say it was a pleasant experience but if it wasn't for Julie, it could have been a lot worse. We chatted a bit (well, as much as you can when you have all sorts of stuff in your mouth). I have to go back for the top teeth next week. Julie--if you're reading this--the numbing mouthwash lasted until noon. Not bad.

I got done in plenty of time to go and pick up my big girl from school. She had colored some papers and made a shield with her name on it. I think she had a great time! We celebrated by going out to lunch with her other favorite adult, Mary, and then did a little shopping. We're barely home in time to welcome home our other school bound kid, Caleb!

I Made it Myself-- Unwrapped Top

This week I finished up something just for me. My Unwrapped top. I started this project on May 20th, finished knitting it on Sept. 6th, and blocked it yesterday.

I used Jaeger Extra Fine Merino DK wool (coral) on size 5 needles. This was yarn I purchased for 40% off (still not quite budget friendly!) when Personal Threads was clearing out all their discontinued Jaeger. That's why I got this color---it was all they had enough of. The color really is nice, I was just hoping for a blue or red or green (of course!).

(please excuse my self-timer pics)

The pattern was really fun. There was always something to look forward to. The yoke is different than any other I've knit but the fit is really great. Once I slogged through all of those yoke stitches, the knitting went really quickly.

I love the linen stitch detailing on the bottom, neck, and sleeves. This top is supposed to have a tie but I don't know yet if I'm going to knit it. Now that I'm looking at the pics, I think it needs it. Maybe I'll crank that out today sometime.

My only complaint with this knit is that the faux-wrap stitches hit the diagonal too quickly and chop through my bosom. I'm sure this is not the fault of the pattern, just the fault of my overactive genes. I wasn't smart enough to figure out (at least this time through) how to make it travel at a slower rate.

I didn't have to adjust the pattern at all to get the right length and/or proportions. Even with the faux-wrap, this is the best fitting knit I've ever made for myself. Kudos to me! ;)

Hoping for Good Karma

Amy at Average Everyday Superwoman won a really great blog prize...100 mini moo cards and tickets to the Blogher Reach Out Tour. Then, she realized that she couldn't use them (story here) so they are back up for grabs. Someone else is really going to have a great time at BlogHer in her place. So, here is to hoping that the great time someone is going to have because she is paying this forward...comes back to her and her family tenfold!

Eva

Taken with my new camera...a Canon S5 IS using the color select mode. I didn't do any editing to it on my computer. I'm wishing now she would have let me comb her hair today.

So Far Today...

Woke up late.
Ate an omelet and toast.
Got ready for the day.
Read some blogs.
Checked my email.
Twittered.
Went with Carl and the kids to Holmes Lake Park.
We went to a fishing clinic for special needs kids.
They got free poles and lunch.
They liked it.
We didn't catch anything.
They used real bait.
I used my brand new camera.
I love it.
I can't wait to show it off.
As soon as I load the software, I'll share the awesome pictures I took today.
I'm getting ready to go to knitting group.
I think I'll take my unwrapped top and a pair of socks.
I was sick of knitting socks but now that the weather is cooler, I want to wear some.
I need more pairs.
We meet at Braeda and I'm super hungry.
I might leave early so I can eat first.

I love Saturday.

Something Bigger

Last year I decided that I was going to blog every single day. Check.

This year I kept blogging every day and added taking a picture every day for Project 365. Check.

I'm starting to think about projects for next year.

Something bigger.

Something super awesome.

Any ideas?

Three Days, Three Different Concerts

Boyz II Men

They started a group and here they are kickin' it just for you.

We didn't get to this concert early enough to score seats inside. It was jam packed an hour before the show started. So, we camped out on the grass and waited for the show to start. Lucky for me, they opened with Motown Philly so after that we moved across the street to sit on a bench. We could still kind of see them and we could hear the concert just fine. Plus, we avoided all the second hand smoke.

The crowd was an interesting mix of 30 somethings and lovers of R & B. We had some ladies by us on the grass that were freaking out like teenagers. I liked watching them just as much as I liked the show.

Jo Ann Castle

What? You don't know who Jo Ann Castle is? I realize that most people my age probably aren't Lawrence Welk afficionados. However...we love her. When I told Carl that she was coming to the state fair, he rearranged his work schedule so he could be there (she played on a Tuesday morning).
We were by far the youngest people there. While we were waiting, Eva had a drink and Carl listened to his mp3 player. I was knitting. It was interesting that the person introducing Jo Ann was a VP from a local health care center and started the introduction with a quick commercial on their new assisted living facility. A little different than the Boyz II Men show when they were just promoting the local top 40 station and the CW.

We didn't get that great of seats on purpose. Eva was a little wiggly and we wanted to be by an exit. The music was great. I heard a couple of songs before Eva couldn't stand it anymore. She had to run around.
Here she is at her most attentive. Carl said the concert was good and Eva and I had a good time walking around the fair. We caught a little bit of the pirate diving show.

STYX

The Styx concert was on Labor Day and I went with Wendy, Shannon, and Shauna.

It was great. We rocked to classics like Too Much Time on My Hands, Lady, and Come Sail Away. In addition to some minor hearing loss (we were about 10 rows away from the front) we enjoyed people watching.

As you can imagine, there were some hard core rockers in attendance. Plus, lots of drunks. Wendy pointed this lady out to me. She was drinking from a paper bag. This wouldn't be so out of place at an outdoor concert like this was but if you consider who that bag belongs to...it makes it a little more interesting.

Fun times, as usual.

Rock on.

Farworld Blog Tour with author J. Scott Savage

J. Scott Savage, author of Farworld: Water Keep took some time to virtually visit me at the Nebraska State Fair to answer some of my questions. I got an advanced reader copy of this book to read over the summer and I must say, I enjoyed it. I don't consider myself all that into fantasy books (odd considering I love LOTR, Harry Potter, etc...) but I felt myself being drawn to the characters and the interesting story. I won't spill the beans here but I will say that if you enjoy fantasy books and/or have kids in the 9-12 range, they will love it.

Now, on with the interview:

I'm here (virtually) enjoying a corn dog and a lemonade at the Nebraska State Fair talking with author J. Scott Savage about his newest book Water Keep, Farworld Book 1.

What is your favorite fair food?

Well I really like funnel cakes, and I also like fresh squeezed lemonade. But NOT together.

Are there certain foods that you like to eat while you write? I promise this interview won't be all about food. Sometimes I just can't help myself when there are signs for fried twinkies and hot beef sundaes (don't ask) all around.

Sorry hot beef sundaes and fried twinkies make my stomach do strange (not good) things. I actually don’t eat at all when I write. I “earn” food breaks. But when I get caught up in a story, I would forget to breathe if it wasn’t automatic.

Now that all that food talk is out of the way, let's chat about the book. This is the first book in the Farworld series and we are introduced to some great characters. We've got a wizard that turns into a wolf, a boy with some physical disabilities that can do magic, a girl that lives in a magic world that can't do magic, dark creatures that turn into snakes, and animals that tell jokes. How do you come up with all this stuff?

Mostly I read through old books people have all forgotten about. No just kidding. The old books are all about people named Burtlesmith who live at Puddlesby on the Pond. Why didn’t Agatha Christie have some nice man-eating slugs or something? Mostly I just like to imagine a bit before I start writing. I want to come up with things that are not what the reader will be expecting. If I can surprise myself, hopefully I can surprise the readers too.

Sometimes I can't help myself and I pretend to cast a movie based on the books that I read. If this book were to become a movie, who would you want to play the main characters?

Could I get the whole Monty Python group to do it? With Napoleon Dynamite as Marcus? I’ll bet that would tick people off. And they thought Edward was miscast. No, let’s see. I’m really bad with actors. But I’d like Master Therapass to played by either Morgan Freeman or Harrison Ford. I’d like AnnaSophia Robb as Kyja, but with dark hair. I think Marcus would have to be an unknown. I like the look of Freddie Highmore but with Shia LaBeouf’s attitude.

Speaking of characters, I love the character of Jerrick. He's got a minor part in this book but I couldn't help but think he might show up again in the later volumes. Can I hold out hope that he'll return or am I way off base here?

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we see him again.

How do you like those marching bands? There is never a shortage of entertainment here at the Nebraska State Fair! Speaking of music, Stephanie Meyer always acknowledges the musical groups that got her through the writing of her books. Does music help your creative process or is there some other muse you have?

Music does inspire me, but usually when I’m thinking up the story. Not when I’m writing it. AC/DC is the theme band for the Dark Circle . Led Zeppelin may be the Farworld theme band. I really love movie sound tracks. Lord of the Rings, Far and Away, Star Wars, Rocky.

Here's a random question: There are 10 main classes in the Dewey Decimal System. If you could only read books from one of those classes for the rest of your life, which one would you choose and why?

800. Literature. I make up most of my facts anyway. So who needs the rest?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my silly questions here at the fair. I'm sure my readers have enjoyed getting to know you a little better and will remember to go and pick up their own copy of your book. Any final thoughts?

Thank you. Great questions. And a really great fair. Funny, I was expecting it only to be fair. (That’s a little fair humor.)

Fair humor, indeed.

If you'd like to get your own copy of the book...you can't. At least not yet. It is due out September 12th but you can preorder it here.

Rainy Daze

I have three State Fair concerts to blog about but I can't bring myself to do it right now. The rain has lulled me into submission. All I want to do for the rest of the day is craft or play Bella Dancerella with Eva (Let's DANCE!).

I also want to post this youtube video of Styx.

Come Sail Away.

I Made it Myself-- Ponytail Holders

This week for I Made it Myself, I've got some ponytail holders to show.

I'm gearing up for the fall/winter craft shows so I'm getting a little bit of an inventory together. I made these this week. The hardest part is telling Eva that these aren't for her.

She loves wearing hers and we always get comments on them. I think part of it is because Eva is so darn cute...not just because of my amazing handiwork.

Kayli was the one that inspired me to make these. I took her idea (I think she told me she got it from someone else, too) and made some to fit my needs.

I have these ponytail holders listed at my Etsy shop. They would look great on your kids and would make great gifts for all those fun birthday parties they get invited to.

If you would like to participate in I Made it Myself, take a quick read-through of the guidelines and add your post below! We had a sharp drop-off on participation these past few weeks and I hope it is because people have been too busy to craft (HOW CAN THAT BE????). I'm sure the holiday today won't help but I'm certainly looking forward to seeing what people have made!
