I consider myself pretty geeky. I love the internet, blogging and all of my social media stuff. One thing I don't do is text. Not my thing. It's only in the past year or two that I've actually started using my cellphone more than my home phone. Texting just seemed silly when I hardly used my phone and I was always near a computer for email. But now I'm not at home as much. I'm too cheap to pay for a data plan on my cell so I can't check my email on the go. I do have an iPod Touch so I can check it if I have wi-fi. HOWEVER....I'm heading to a trade show at the end of the month with 3 of my business partners. I have a feeling that texting is going to be the best way for me to keep in contact with them during the show as we work. We won't be together most of the time so I think it is time to bite the bullet and get a messaging plan. Here's my question: will 200 texts a month be enough or do I "splurge" and pay $20 for unlimited?
I have unlimited texts as part of our overall plan, but to be honest; I never hit 200 per month. And I do text more now than I ever thought I would when the trend started. HOWEVER, I'm not a super cool business woman with contacts and conferences to attend. Are you able to modify your messaging plan? Because my thought would be to try it out at 200 messages for the first month and see if you need the splurge. I think the conference at the end of the month is a good way to test this because that really is your true test of how many texts you need.
ReplyDeleteNatalie's pay-as-you-go phone (can't believe I bought my middle school aged child a phone, but with all her activities it gives ME peace of mind that she has it) requires a payment for each text that she sends which we make her pay to us each time we renew her phone minutes. That has taught her well to pick and choose when she needs to send them.
There was a lot of talk yesterday on twitter with all the LNK peeps. You may want to ask Ross what phone he has-- a smart phone for $70/month with unlimited texts. Then you get the best of both worlds.

Let me tell you about the $500 (yes. five HUNDRED dollar) text bill we received when we first got the plan...The dude at the store said "Oh, I text all the time and never send close to 600 texts per month." Then 41 days later we receive a bill that shows she'd sent/received 1,600 texts in just under a month! Keep in mind, they charge for sending *and* receiving texts.
Since then, I tell everyone: if it's only a few dollars more, then take the "unlimited" plan.
Plus, if you *really* like using text messaging, you could lose the phone and touch, and just get yourself an iPhone! lol
I have yet to hit my 200 txts in a month, but I'm upgrading to a smart phone this spring. With school and everything I really need to be able to access some of the stuff I can't get to at work.
ReplyDeleteIf $20 is all for unlimited, I say go for that. Better that than the huge overage charges. You may also have a ton of friends that start texting you once they realize that you have it & theirs to you do count like refibered said.
ReplyDeleteUnlimited! As someone already pointed out, every text counts, whether you send it or just receive. 200 can come and go before you know it, and if you have to pay for every text over that 200, you're going to be wishing pretty quickly that you'd gone with the unlimited package.
ReplyDeleteI used to feel the same way you do about texting, now it's my preferred method of communication--a full keyboard makes all the difference. Of course, if you start texting I'm going to expect some action my way...
