Project 365

11/24/08

11/25/08
Taking a break at Golden Gate Park.

11/26/08

Caleb and Eva both loved playing with all of the toys at grandma's house. They especially liked Carl's old California Raisins.

11/27/08
We had a great Thanksgiving and after dinner we drove to see Theo, Carl's grandma.

11/28/08

This is one of the pictures I took at the Sacramento Zoo. Eva was hanging from the rope spider web.

11/29/08Here's the crew just before we headed out to the airport.

11/30/08

This picture is a little deceptive since Eva's been in a bad mood all day. It could have something to do with the fact that she got little sleep and then smashed her lip open at church.

Holiday Gift Guide Day 4 Gifts for the Home

Holiday Gift Guide Logo

1. Blue Sky Road 8X10 Glossy Print from PaintingPrints on Etsy.

I've been searching for some artwork to inspire a bedroom makeover and fell in love with a bunch of prints from PaintingPrints on Etsy. Prints are an excellent way to have artwork in your home when you are on a budget.

Price: $22

2. Digital Coin Counting Money Jar

I don't know what it is about this product that makes me want it so desperately. Every time I see one I wish I had one. Am I silly for really wanting one of these? Even sillier for recommending it as a gift for others? I just think that if I could see exactly how much change I'm accumulating over the year, it will motivate me to put the change in there instead of spend it. Yeah, that's the ticket.
Price: $19.99

3. Wool Felt Christmas Owl Ornaments

I was browsing Etsy the other day and came across a listing for these super cute ornaments. I knew I wanted to feature them on my holiday gift guide. I don't know exactly what it is about them but I can't help but think that they would look great in anyone's home or on anyone's Christmas tree. I had originally picked a listing with just two ornaments but they sold quickly. If you're interested in these, I'd suggest acting now!

Price: $20

4. KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer

If you don't have a stand mixer yet in your home and you do any sort of baking. GET ONE NOW! This is one of my favorite kitchen products. I have the Classic mixer but this Artisan series is on sale for just $10 more so it is certainly a better bargain right now. This is a real work horse of a mixer and comes in so many great colors.

Price: $209.99

5. Le Creuset Stoneware Petite Blueberry Casserole
This is an individual sized casserole dish that measures approximately 5" X 5". It looked too cute not to include. I don't like blueberries much but I sure love the look of this stoneware. They also make a petite pear and a petite artichoke. Even if you can't think of a use for these in your cooking, they would make fun storage containers.

Price: $22.45

Holiday Gift Guide Day 3 Gifts for Baby

Holiday Gift Guide Logo

Today's Holiday Gift Guide is all about gifts for babies. I've included things that can be for newborn up to about 18 months. Of course, some of these things can be used beyond that age but it was my self imposed guideline for this category.

1. Prince Lionheart Wheely Bug
I saw this product in person last weekend at a craft show I attended. It caught my attention immediately and I was intrigued. Still, I didn't think how this could be any better than the plastic ride-on toys that my kids used. That was until I saw a 5 year old get on it and zoom around. It is on casters so it turns on a dime. It goes where you want it to. It is sturdy. Not only did it keep a 5 year old occupied, it is a great product for a pre-walker/walker to zoom around on. The handle makes it easy to use as a push toy as well. You might feel a little zing when you see the price but when you think about the quality and how your child can use this for years, the price seems a little more reasonable.

Price: $59.99

2. Stackable Wooden Sheep by Tactile Baby.
These cute stackable wooden animals come in a variety of shapes but this sheep was my personal favorite. Each piece is held together with industrial strength velcro. You can mix and match animals or just stack them in a wild array of configurations for fun.

Price: $22 (on sale now at Happy Chickadee)

3. Three Long Sleeve Onesie Wooden Gift Box Set from handmadejig on Etsy.

This set makes a fabulous customized gift--with no gift wrapping required! It is all ready to go in a wooden box that can later be used as a keepsake box or used for some other purpose. The onesies are 100% interlock cotton and the image is an iron-on.

Price: $40

4. Link-a-doos from Fisher Price.

This classic toy was a must-have for my babies. Link-a-doos are one of the first things that the little ones love to grasp onto and chew on. These will link to each other, on the car seat, on the stroller, on other toys, etc... You can keep a couple in your diaper bag or purse to have something handy in case of a fussy baby emergency. This is one of those things that I always recommend to new moms. Get some link-a-doos!

Price: $14.99 (for the 20 link pack)

5. Funky Striped Legwarmers by Knotty Baby
Knotty Baby legwarmers are made by a work at home mom and are a great addition to a young baby's wardrobe. If you live in a colder climate, this is an easy way to add a layer without having to fight with a pair tights. They come in a variety of styles and fit sizes 0-4 so they are economical and will grow with your baby!

Price: $9

Bonus product: Baby Games eBook

Angela England is a writer and blogger that has written a great little eBook called Baby Games for You to Play. You can find some sneak peeks of the content on her blog. But, at $.99 (if purchased before December 1st), this eBook is a great value to anyone that might have a little one in their home. It is full of great ideas and would make a great stocking stuffer or shower gift.

Price: $0.99 (before Dec. 1st)- $2.50 (regular price)

Holiday Gift Guide Day 2 Gifts for Boys and Girls

Holiday Gift Guide Logo

In honor of me becoming one of the Indie experts over at Wishpot, today's picks are all handmade!

Because some of these items are made custom and made by hand, if you see something you like---act on it! They might not be available for long.

1. Superhero Capes on Etsy.

This is a great example of something that is not available for long. This particular cape is (sometimes) available at superflykidz on etsy. Here is a link to another shop with capes.

Price: $8 (plain) and higher

2. Four Little Girl dolls from toocute on Etsy.

I fell in love with these little dolls. They are just 2 inches tall, made of wood, and come with a little pouch. What little girl wouldn't love to have some of these to play with? Bonus: They don't use batteries and they are quiet! Also available are family doll sets and even sets with pets.

Price: $26

3. Euro Wrap Tunic by Refibered on Etsy.

Another full disclosure here. This is made by Kelly, a friend from our local Lincoln Handmade team on Etsy. I've seen this top in person and on a little girl and I'm absolutely in love with it. It is a wrap top that is totally reversible and with four different coordinating fabrics, it can be worn four different ways! Four tops in one! It is great because it can be worn over alone or over a shirt so it is truly a year round top. She has dresses available, too that can become tunics as the child grows. She does custom orders.

Price: $29

4. Black Dots and Yellow Coloring Tote from cuddlebuddies4kids at Etsy.

Have you seen all those crayon rolls around? They are really cute and a good idea. This takes it to the next level. You can tote around your crayons and a coloring book at the same time! This tote is made with great colors for a boy or a girl. This particular etsy seller has a lot of different fabrics to choose from.

Price: $10

5. Bookplate Variety Pack Set of 12 from ModernClassicKids on Etsy.

This is a great gift for any book-loving kid. This particular seller has a great variety. They are printed and have an adhesive backing so they are ready to peel and stick! I'm planning on ordering some of these for my book-loving brothers.

Price: $6

Holiday Gift Guide Day 1 Gifts for Men

Holiday Gift Guide Logo

Day one of my Holiday Gift Guide features five gifts for men. Each day this week I'll feature five new items for different types of people. Next Monday it will culminate in a giveaway that you won't want to miss!
This wall clock is made from recycled computer and bike parts. It is not only eco-friendly...it's really neat. My husband is a professor of mechanical engineering and I'm sure this clock would look great on his office wall.

Price: $35.75

2. Gray Wool and Cotton Ribbed Sweater Sleeve Scarf from kundhicreative.

Full disclosure on this one. Julie is a friend. However, she did not ask me to include this item on my gift guide. I'm including it because I think this would make a great gift for anyone! This scarf is made from the felted sleeves of a recycled sweater and then hand sewn to some cotton fabric. It was designed to keep in mind those that enjoy the warmth of wool but aren't able to wear it against their skin. Another eco-friendly option for the holidays.

Price: $18.00

3. iPod Retro Mini Speakers from Delight.Com.

One of the best things about this little speaker is that it doesn't need batteries! It uses the power from your iPod and is just the right size to set on your desk. The Lego brick shape and variety of colors make this a gift that will please just about anyone with an iPod. And, for under $20, the price is right.

Price: $19.75

4. Steampunk Cufflinks from edmdesigns.
I found these cufflinks on etsy when I was just browsing around. These are made from vintage watch pieces and would truly make a unique gift. These make me wish my husband wears cufflinks. This particular etsy seller also has a variety of other items made from vintage watch pieces if this particular one isn't your style.

Price: $65.00

5. TomTom ONE Portable GPS Navigation System.

No need to stop and ask for directions (or drive around for hours denying that you're lost) with this handy gadget. I seem to remember that these were the "it" gift last season but if you held off (like we did), you might find that the prices have dropped and some of the models have been improved since then. This one is affordable and the reviews have been consistent.

Price: $133.88

I Made it Myself--Final Week!

This is going to be the last week for I Made it Myself. Don't cry. I'm planning something even more awesome.

I'm going retro this week and showing something I made when I was first married. This was pre-knitting and I was all about crochet. This is a filet crochet table runner. I put it on top of the piano.

While I was cleaning the piano last week, I took the opportunity to take some pictures of this masterpiece without any stuff on it. I graphed out the pattern on my own using an alphabet from a book and the edging was from a book also.

I can't remember how long it took me to make. But, I was glad when it was finished. In that same time period I made my mom a wall hanging that says, "Families are Forever". She has that hanging up over an wide entryway in her home.

This is one of those things that I will keep forever. Do you have something you made that you will never throw out or give away?

If you have something to share for I Made it Myself this week, use the Mr. Linky below!

Project 365

11/17/08

You can't really tell from this picture but Eva has a healthy "glow" from having put almost a whole jar of petroleum jelly all over her body. She's still a little greasy even a week later.

11/18/08
Caleb and Eva have been sleeping in the same bed all week. It is kind of nice because they don't give me any trouble about going to bed!

11/19/08
The picture that started my cleaning frenzy!

11/20/08

Caleb was keeping me company while I cleaned my craft room. I wore him out.

11/21/08

Craft room clean. Check.

11/22/08

My booth at the Local Artisan's Bazaar on Saturday.

11/23/08

One of my favorite movies. Do you know what it is?

Houston, Here I Come!

I'm attending the Mom 2.0 Summit

I really am one of the luckiest people I know! There are more contests to win a ticket to the event so get those badges on your blogs.

Good luck, Deb!

Why Didn't I Do This Years Ago?

Taking pictures of my messed up rooms sure is motivating me to clean them! My craft room is in tip top shape again.

BEFORE

AFTER:

Full disclosure:

These boxes are moved into my living room until I can give them away. Anyone want some fabric and yarn? I have two more boxes full of yarn to give away, too.

What a Difference a Day Makes

BEFORE:

AFTER:

I shamed myself into cleaning, apparently. I didn't just pick up the pillows, either. I dusted. I decluttered. It felt really good. I need to fix the mirror that goes over the piano and then the room will be almost exactly how I want it!

In effort to motivate myself to get my craft room back in working order, I present exhibit A.

This is what happens when you work really hard to get ready for an event and then you don't clean up after yourself and then you start piling on more and more. This is on my to do for today.

Cleaning House

This is probably the most clean room in my house at the moment. You can't even see the worst of it in the picture. I can get my kids to pick up the pillows. But, it requires a huge effort and sometimes it is just easier for me to do it. Five times a day. If I did. Instead, I leave them on the floor until I can't stand it anymore or I force the kids to do it.
In other rooms of the house I'm working on decluttering. In the past week I've ditched 3 bags full of toys. The floors are still covered. Do they multipy? What's the deal? I'm almost ready to get rid of EVERYTHING and start over.
Decluttering is a great thing to do right before the holidays. Especially right before the holiday shopping season. It makes me realize even more that we need less stuff. I've already asked the grandparents not to send gifts this year. Instead they are going to contribute to our yearly passes to the zoo and Children's museum. A gift that keeps giving...without the clutter!

Cheap Wii Alternative

My mom has a Wii. Caleb played it a lot when we were down in Oklahoma. His favorites are boxing and the 2 person run on Wii Fit. It has been a couple of weeks since we left Oklahoma and he still asks multiple times a day to play those games. He was just about to break me into begging and pleading to Santa to bring us a Wii. Then, he came up with this:

Wii boxing on the cheap.

Get 4 balls. These are the kind that you find in ball pits.

Keep two for yourself and give two to your opponent (sister).

Say, "Round One."

Start boxing.

Luckily this has not been the cause of any accidents...as of yet. They "hit" each other nicely with the balls and pretend to get knocked out. Then they count and hop back up again.

Maybe I won't have to beg Santa for a Wii after all.

I Made it Myself- Baby Sweater

I was digging around the archives and my flickr photos to see what I've made lately that I haven't featured yet on my blog. This was one project that got skipped by accident.

My friend, Brenda, sent me a huge box of yarn and other goodies from her craft room. Included were some skeins that she wanted me to make into a sweater for her (then unborn) baby. The pictures don't really show the true colors but it is lime green and navy. It is a great little cotton sweater.

She has since had her baby and he was a whopping 10 pounder. I hope his head fits through the hole. That is my downfall in sweater making and I may just have to stick to cardigans for babies from now on. I'll probably see her during the Christmas holidays so I may have to do a little sweater rescue at that time.

Do you have something to share this week for I Made it Myself? Do it here!

Project 365

11/10/08Lots of pics this week of my etsy items leading up to the virtual trunk show that was on Thursday.

11/11/08

Eva brought this home from the babysitter's house. She wore it almost all week. I took it back on Saturday. Now she's sporting a cheerleading outfit.

11/12/08

Another card organizer is in the shop!

11/13/08
Different day. Same cute puppy.

11/14/08

His hands are fast as lightening!

11/15/08

This hat is NOT available for sale. It is gone. I traded it for a super cute doll that some of you saw me carrying at church today. I have enough of this yarn to make more. This is my kid hat with the loop at the top. The loop is so you can hang it up on a coat rack.

11/16/08
Today I'm reading through these books. So many fun things to try!

Run! Run!

Yesterday I took Caleb to the doctor. We were in the parking lot waiting in the car because we were early. We were just listening to some music and I was observing.

A compact car pulled up beside us. We were parked as close to the door as you could get. It started to sprinkle. The mom in the car had a baby that was probably 4-6 months old. She got out of her car and started to get her baby ready to go in to the office. She put a jacket over the sweater the baby was already wearing. She put the hood up. She got one of those things that goes over the car seat where you can open a little peep hole for the baby. She put that on the car seat.

A mini van pulls up on the other side of us. By this time the sprinkles are turning into rain. This mom has a baby about the same age as the woman in the compact car. She also has four other kids. In no time all the kids, the baby and the mom are on their way to the door with the mom yelling, "Run! Run!". They all made it to the door...hardly getting wet...and in record time.

Meanwhile, the compact car mom lugs her bundled up babe with her overflowing diaper bag to the door.

I loved the contrast between these two moms and I could certainly see myself in one of them.

Are you a runner or a bundler?

Hurry up! Come on! Comment already!

Some of My Faves

We got our pictures back yesterday! They turned out pretty good, in my opinion. I figured it was about time I updated my profile picture since the previous one was taken when Eva was just 8 months old.

How cute is my family? Really. How cute?

These pictures were taken by Dean Casey Photography.

Around the World

Mark you calendars. Thursday, November 13th, at 7pm central time. You need to be at the Etsy Virtual Labs for the Around the World Virtual Trunk Show! On this day, Etsy sellers from around the world will get together to show their wares to a live audience in Etsy's Virtual Labs. Here you'll be able to meet the maker, learn about the process and even see them live in their studio via webcams! With the help of Etsy Teams (groups of sellers who join together to promote Etsy and their work) this is going to be the handmade shopping event of the season, and is not to be missed!

I'm on the local Lincoln Handmade team and we will be participating. Please come and support me and my friends! It will be a great way to find some new handmade products for gifts and there will also be special discounts and prizes for those that join us!

I believe you'll have to be a registered etsy user to participate so if you haven't signed up over there yet...go do it!

To find the virtual labs: Go to Etsy.com, click on the community tab at the top, and then click on Virtual Labs. We will be in a room labeled Lincoln Handmade or Nebraska. You will be able to check out a lot of great other teams from around the world tomorrow evening as well!

Please spread the word!

Customer Service

Yesterday I had a short list of things to do. Among them included a couple of trips to a pharmacy. Walgreen's had a coupon a couple of weeks ago where if you transferred a prescription, you could get a $25 gift card. We fill 5 different prescriptions a month so I thought it would be no big deal to transfer one for a month and get my gift card. I seriously don't know if it was worth it.

My local Walgreens is crowded, smelly, and slow. They never have enough people to check you out and the aisles are always a mess. Their rebate program is also ridiculously hard to manage (most are mail-in rebates with a separate booklet).

I usually go to CVS. It is bright and clean. The people at the pharmacy know me. In fact, I had to go there yesterday and the pharmacy tech asked me how my trip to Oklahoma was. Granted...I'm hard to forget since I have to take the kids with me a lot of the time, but she remembered the last time I was in there and that we were about to go on our road trip. I love that. CVS also has extra care bucks that I love and they are easy to understand and use.

Now I have this $25 Walgreens card burning a hole in my pocket and I can't bring myself to go back in there.

I Made it Myself-- Christmas Cards

It is entirely possible that I blogged about these cards last Christmas. I may have even sent some out to you. Well, I have more!

I really love the look of this card. I put some crystal effects on the berries (I pretended this stamp was holly berries) to make them stand out a bit. You can see a little extra gloss in the pictures.

Real red and old olive is one of my favorite Christmas color combinations. I used white ink for the sentiment and white organza ribbon. I added a set of 12 of these cards to my shop.

I don't have too many "new" things to show lately. I've just been making a lot of the same for craft shows. Next week I should have something really fun...if I can get it finished by then!

Have something to share for I Made it Myself? Do it here!

Playing a treasure hunt game with Eva. Did you notice that she voted?

11/05/08Eva loves her Dora and Diego puppets. They were a great find at Walgreens for 90% off. Yep, you saw that right. NINETY PERCENT OFF! Best $1.50 I ever spent.

11/06/08
Our friends from Indiana came to visit (Tara and her kids) on Wed night so we had the air mattress out. We blew off a little steam the next day by sliding. We have to put it away before daddy comes home, though!

11/07/08
The Hey Teach sweater is coming along rather nicely. I don't get to work on it too much but when I do...it goes quickly!

Boomer Sooner! Caleb played catch with Daddy during the football game.

Eva played for a long time with her doll house today after church. It has been a great week!

Day Date

I had nothing on my calendar today. Neither did Carl. We can't remember the last time this happened so we decided to take advantage and schedule a little date time. I dropped the kids off at the sitters and we were free!

What did we do with four hours of kid free time?

We couldn't decide. We talked about what we used to do together. We thought that maybe we should get a hobby we can do together. Or, a project. Something.

In the end we went to Target to buy dress pants, Office Depot to buy a self-inking stamp, and Texas Roadhouse to eat lunch. We then came back home and organized some of the kids toys and Carl's side of the closet (he seriously has more clothes than me but only wears a fraction of them---he won't get rid of things!).

Are we really this boring?

I guess so, but we had a great time!

I'm Too Sexy

Want to see some of our family pictures on the Dean Casey Photography website?

GO HERE!

Super cute shots of Caleb and Eva in the children section and one of our family in the family section.

They did such a great job and it was a lot of fun. Don't you want them to take YOUR family pics?

The Next Era

I'm thinking about doing some blog changes around here. I'm still in the planning stages but I'm curious what types of things my readers like the most. Care to take a quick poll for me? It is on my sidebar. I know I have at least 60 readers subscribed in Google Reader so I'd love it if everyone took the time to let me know.

Thanks!

Cat Whisperer

I thought I'd post a few more pictures from our trip to Oklahoma. These were taken at my dad's house in Goldsby.

Eva wanted to carry around that cat like a baby. The cat was surprisingly accommodating. Well, as much as a cat can be accommodating.

Boomer Sooner

On Nov 1st I attended the OU/Nebraska game down in Norman. Oooh boy. That was SO MUCH FUN! I went with my dad. My grandpa and Barbara are season ticket holders so we rode with them. They have a parking pass for the parking garage attached to the stadium so we got to drive right on campus to get there. I will totally admit that I was tearing up. I have such great memories from OU and I love that campus. Most days I'm glad I'm not 19 anymore but the next time I go back to Norman I'm definitely taking some time to walk around campus.

Here are a few of the pictures I took at the game.

This picture was a happy accident. The Sooners were warming up right in front of our section. I zoomed in to get this shot of Coach Stoops but look at the name of the player in the background! I didn't notice that until I uploaded the pictures to my computer the next day.

This shot I took right as we were about to make our first touchdown. I wanted to give you all an idea of how close we were. I didn't use the zoom at all on this shot. There were a few Sooner fans in our section but we were definitely outnumbered. Once the score was 28-0 I started feeling really bad and started cheering for the Huskers to make at least one touchdown. They were really outmatched this year. I can't wait until the OU/Nebraska games are like they used to be. Maybe in a few more years?

The sunset was beautiful and we had a great time! I'll have Barbara buy my tickets from OU for next year's game so I'll be able to sit with the Sooner fans and won't feel so self conscious cheering for my team!

The drive home to Nebraska the next day was fun because everywhere we stopped there were Husker fans returning from the game. I even spotted a couple OU fans with Nebraska plates.

I Made it Myself-- Crafty Conservative

Today for I Made it Myself, I'm talking about one of my favorite creations---my blog! Today is my 4 year blog anniversary so I thought we could take a walk down memory lane.

Here is my very first post. I lived in Indiana and gave my family aliases. I gave up the aliases a few years later.

Today's post will be number 1,377.

Last year on my blog anniversary I did a post with a bunch of links. Care to revisit?

In honor of this most special day, I'm having a contest. You have all day today to enter. The winner will get an assortment of some of my favorite items I've featured on I've Made it Myself.

There are two ways to enter:

1. Post your own creation for I Made It Myself this week.

2. Use the Mr. Linky to share your favorite Crafty Conservative post. Type your name and find the exact URL for the post you chose and copy and paste that in for the link. You can use the search bar at the top left of the blog to search just my blog for your favorite.

Don't forget to comment so I know where to find you if you win! I'll use the random number generator to select the winner tomorrow.

Here's to four more years...(and more!).

The Long Drive

Today I will be driving back to Nebraska. The drive down was a breeze. I credit the anticipation of fun times with the ducks and the dogs and a lot of prayer.

They don't seem as excited to see their daddy after a week away from home as they were about seeing the ducks. I wonder what he thinks about that? It is really hard to top the ducks---no matter who you are. They love them.

Anyway...please, keep us in your prayers today. We hope to arrive safe and sound with no major incidents.

If I'm up for it I'll blog about the football game when I get home and also post my Project 365.

Coming up this week: My 4 year blogiversary.

Lil' Pumpkin

We went to a pumpkin patch yesterday with the kids and I took some pictures of Kenny sporting the pumpkin hat I knit for him.

He looked super cute in it, that's for sure. He is such a good baby.

Caleb decided after about 30 minutes of constant screaming (most of that in the car on the way) that he could calm down and try to enjoy himself.

I think he at least liked the pony ride.
